Chapter pack priority

By EGG2, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

As someone who only owns the Core Set right now, I plan on treating it as a board game where friends come over and play with my cards and don't feel like they have to buy their own set.(I can hear you snickering "Ya, for now.") Is there any point to me buying chapter packs?(I would only buy one of each) The A Time of Ravens CPs seem pointless with the Summer/Winter thing and only one card to change seasons. Is this right? With the way I plan on using the Core Set what is a good list of priority for CPs? Or should I just stick with the Core Set and let obsession compell me to buy 3 of everything?(NOT what I want)

i'll copy/paste reccomendations i've made on the chapter packs from different threads and add what i think of summer/winter. Hopefully you can use it to find your own ideal amount.

However, you should get the older Chapter packs if you can (there are some on ebay and online stores like ccgarmory). Here is a list of them with my thoughts on the minimum you should have of them:

The War of Five Kings - At least one, probably 2 (Pyromancer's cache is banned so i'm not sure you need 3x of these chapter packs anymore)

Ancient Enemies - 3x (solid events and solid characters all around, you will have 3x of the plots, which you might not need right now, but when you start making multiple decks for a specific house it will be nice to have multiple plots)

Sacred Bonds - 3x (you WILL want 3x of the 'to be a...' events)

Epic Battles - 1x (the events in this one are iffy right now, if you want to experiment with them then get 3x)

The Battle of Ruby Ford - 2-3 (depends on what house you will play, i.e. 3x for stark, 2x for targ, and if you like the nuetral characters)

Calling the Banners - 2-3 (again depending on what house you play, lannister probably wants 3x of this)

Summer - very strong mechinic in the LCG environemnt, it gives you gold 9though to both players) and draw whiel being able to 'turn on' some interesting stuff in both Targ and Bara mostly. you get 3x of the ravens that change the season and 3x of the ravens that get rid of other ravens (same for winter, just different season raven)

Winter - as a mechinic not the strongest right now (big emphasis on right now). however, it has some of the stronger characters in the game ( Maester Vyman, Mance Rayder, Ser Arthur Dayne. Also, good to use cards by themselves, and almsot neccessary for a martell deck, are Underhanded Assassin and Obara Sand)

The quantity on these two depends on what you want to do (if you don't want to run summer you might not need any summer packs, i.e only building stark decks). I buy 3x of every chapter pack to allow for a full playset of the singles, but i bought 4 of the winter to spread out the decks i could put the nuetrals (dayne and Rayder) into.

It depends on what your goal is. If I were you, I would go to tzumainn.com/agot to look at the contents of each chapter pack. Some packs have good and cool unique characters, but not all of them do. If your playgroup is really big on the books, you might want to consider buying just those packs with your favorite characters from the books.

As for me personally, I would recommend getting The War of Five Kings, The Battle of Ruby Ford, and The Winds of Winter, if you like the books and want to have cool unique characters.

Also depends on if you are teaching a group of people who are new to card games in general. I am teaching this game to my game group of ALL newbies, so I keep head scratching to a minimum by taking everyone through the storyline one chapter pack at a time.

Thanks for this info... this is really helpful.

My wife and I are both big fans of the series, and so likely we'll be picking up at least 1 of each pack if we get rolling with the game.

Pyromancer's Cache is banned? That's good to know. What I'm wondering is where to find that kind of info?

Banned and errata'd cards, plus other detailed info on various rules and situations, are set out in the official FAQ. You can find that under the Support section of the game's "minisite": http://new.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=10&enmi=A%20Game%20of%20Thrones%20LCG
