Torpedoes

By Lightningclaw, in X-Wing

What's your favorite torpedo and why?

Harpoon missile.

Proton Torpedo to actually answer the question, having chips+ convert usually leads to 3-4 hits

Plasma or proton, the choice of which is completely dependent on available mods

Horton was made to go with Proton (it's in his goddamn name) because he rerolls blanks only and uses the torp to change focus into relevant results

If you're somehow packing a torp carrier with expertise or focus (ye ole torp scouts) plasmas have a really great ability

There's also the issue of ps. Plasmas fire first because of shield damage, protons later for their crits

Proton torpedo. Crits are fun

Advanced Proton Torpedo.

Sure, it's hard to set up. But that's what makes it all the more glorious.

I like ion torps but they are pricey.

Edit: I didn't say why. I like that they do damage AND apply the ion effect unlike the ion pulse missile.

People still use torpedoes? That’s weird.

Extra munitions

I can't wait to get my hands on ion torpedoes- they seem like so much fun.

I really like Seismic Torpedo.

Thematically it's a neat, novel, and fun mechanic. I really wish FFG made more cards like this. As for usefulness, it can be utilized to clear a lane or to try and splash damage. It's also one of the very few upgrade cards that can synergize with Experimental Interface, another very neat card.

That said, I don't use them in standard because it's not hyper-competitively-efficient, but that's okay not everything needs to be. I do use them an awful lot in Epic, though, because more ships and more obstacles on the board means more chance to splash damage, and I really find it useful to use them merely to clear lanes for my own formation since you have more ships on the board in Epic (and not everything in that format is a turret or a super-maneuverable action-rich ace, neither of which really care about obstacles, so you need approach lanes for your jouster-formations).

One of my favorite "go-to" ships in Epic is a "pathfinder U-Wing"

Heff Tobber (U-Wing) + Jyn Erso + Seismic Torpedo + Enhanced Scopes + Pivot Wing

Moving at PS0 means that it can serve as an excellent and relatively cheap large-base blocker, and when it blocks it has lots of options for actions to take (Focus, TL, Jyn, or Seismic). Also, moving first at PS0, it's the perfect ship to go clear an obstacle out of the way for the rest of the formation. The beauty of Epic is that a ship like this is actually pretty darn useful and a nicely varied Swiss-Army knife to have in the toolbox, while in Standard the U-Wing and all of these upgrades are generally trash.

Extra Munitions. XP

I've got a Guri/Dengar build I'm keen on getting on the table again. Guri carries PTL, FCS, Adv. Pro. Torps, and Scavenger Crane.

Plasma Torps

Protons ... just wish it were practical for X- or Y-wings to fire them.

It's not the absolute worst for Ys to fire torps

Problem is they pay WAY too much for an ept (all the points spent on a named pilot + r2-d6)

Once they get DEADEYE and chips, they're fine (esp with synched)

Other than poons and TLTs being out and out superior to everything, I mean

I've made an argument elsewhere that, for a 3 attack ship (which is most torpedoboats) without chips, torpedos and cannons are 3 points overcosted for what they actually give over the 3 die primary.

Plasmas are 1 use, gain a die/lose a TL, with a conditiional extra damage if you didnt hit hard enough. Protons are the same, exceppt the conditional damage is a critical damage to focus. Ion torps are utility, Advaanced torps are massive damage on a difficult setup.

Chips, of course, throw the calculations way off.

Bomb Loadout

Autoblasters EU bomb loadout kavil, the original "genius"

Plasma Torpedoes for competitive play, Ion and Proton for casual.

In casual games you see more janky lists that don't have a million ways to avoid the range one for Ion or to shed a target lock, so Ionizing several ships at once is so much fun.

I’ve had fun with APTs on PTL Vynder.
