A Use for Targeting Scrambler? (spoiler: it's Corran)

By gamblertuba, in X-Wing

Was thinking about a PS11 Corran build and you start to run a little shy on points. It's not a top list for any number of reasons but since Corran can't shoot after his double tap anyway, this might be a decent use for Targeting Scrambler.

Lowhhrick (28)
Selflessness (1)

Fenn Rau (Sheathipede) (20)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Flight-Assist Astromech (1)

Corran Horn (35)
Push the Limit (3)
Targeting Scrambler (0)
R2-D2 (4)
Engine Upgrade (4)

Total: 97

See I felt it might be a new option for the Palp shuttle. With the way that thing turns around, there will be lots of times when you wont get a shot anyway but people will be jumping on you.

I think you'll just get more mileage and punch (which is what that squad needs) out of FCS than TS. Its like you are handicapping the squad for the sake of running a janky card. Maybe go completely minimal on Corran.

Corran Horn (35)
Adaptability (0)
Targeting Scrambler (0)
R2-D2 (4)

AP-5 (15)
Courier Droid (0)
R2 Astromech (1)

Total: 55

That gives you 45 points for a Poe or Miranda.

yeah for sure, make Corran wont use FCS of AdvSensors... soo much better so you can use s***-on-the-fan scrambler.

It R3 Astromech all over again. Its as bad as bad cards goes.

I mean, TS at least does something. r3 does not, regardless of how you build around it

TS is free, r3 is not

So calling TS an R3 is a giant insult to the game designers, the players, and even to TS itself

NOTHING is R3 astromech, and we can only hope to god above that we shall never see its poorly design hoops-out-the-*** loathsome form ever again

...also you can just put TS on a dang U-wing. You should be able to tell whether or not its clunky *** will be getting any shots when you run it in to try and block something

The only use for Targeting Scrambler is on a Palp Shuttle in place of Col. Detector, or as kindling.

If you are paying 40 points for a VI R2d2 Corran (AKA Bad Corran), just pay the extra points for a real system (FCS or Adv. Sen.). You should alsoprobably take Push and Engine as well.

I was really hoping this would make generic Tie Phantoms viable again as a glass cannon knife fighter living on the edge. Evade and 4 greens vs an unmodified attack when you can't shoot anyways? Sounds pretty fair.

In practice it feels too restricting with that range 1 requirement. It is far to easy to just boost out of R1 with a turret and then let the heavy combo modifiers push damage anyhow. Palp shuttle is the only solid maybe I can see.

Sorry, I didnt mean to offend anyone (well the card, yes and maaaaaaaaaaaaybe the designers too, they DID make r3 too, right?)

But I am sorry, Target Scrambler isnt free. Yeah, it costs zero points.
But bear with me.

Its timing windows is so absolutely horrible, that could be a new mythos. You use it in the start of the planning phase!
"ohhh I gonna block, so I will shout to all corners that I wont shoot this turn. I am so clever. No opponent can EVER benefit of that information before setting the dials...". Its like, if colision detector only works if you say it loudly in the start of the planning phase, and if you did that and not overlaped an obstacle, you discard it.

It janky as ****, you need two cards too needlesly complicate something that is simple (and bad). Scrambled protects agains one ship, chosen in the start of the planning phase, and agains attack mods, and at range 1. Woo

It doesn't do good for all ships that actully use the system slot. Wont do good in the Uwing. ****, the Uwing need a system like "this is now a turret" to be competitive /S

It keeps making the game more defensive, and slower, and fortress-like.

So the costs are:
"needless janky rules, the system slot, you telegraph your play to your opponent, you dont attack"
at least, r3 astro can be used as a Integrated astromech fodder. (there are better, but there are better systems too)
If wasnt unique, it could be used by bwings, ewings (oh... and nym).

0 points make it free compared to r3s 2 points

Opportunity cost is a wash, as both slots are great but r3 is more points than superior options (ie, stuff that actually does things, like FAA). R3 is not integrated fodder as it costs more points than actual integrated fodder and does less

Most importantly, TS doesn't rely on luck. ******* r3's baffling focus result requirement atop the ps restriction necessary for an evade to ever matter.

TS is the strictly superior upgrade.

Dont get me wrong. TS is still ****, but it remains superior to the festering mess that is r3. R3 is probably tied with saboteur as the single worst upgrade in the game

You can still put TS on a lambda or U without losing much of anything (collision detector is the only competition). R3 is NEVER the right choice

Ever.

Much as I hate pwts, getting TWO of those turds with my lovely ARCs is even more infuriating

Targeting Scrambler is pretty clearly a Palp Shuttle card, and it's actually pretty darn good there being free, as it means even if your opponent tries to go after the shuttle first it gains a lot of survivability against R1 attacks. So between, running, bumping, Palp's own auto-evade, and the Targeting Scrambler, the shuttle is a really obnoxious pain to kill.

That being said, if someone wanted to be really 'cute,' they could build a super discount Regen Corran at 36pts, with PS11 Fenn at 21pts to give repositioning and action-economy to said Corran (along with Fenn's defensive buff):

Corran (35)
+ Adaptability (0)
+ Targeting Scrambler (0)
+ Guidance Chips (0)
+ Chopper (1)
Fenn Rau (20)
+ VI (1)

It's probably garbage, but it leaves 43 Points on the table to play with.
