Since TFA Core, and I think the game is in as good a place as it's ever been.
poll: how long have you been playing?
I've been playing since wave 6 dropped. I'm very, very dissatisfied with the game as it currently stands. All told, I've probably spent $1500 AUD on the game, including travel to larger tournaments, tournament entry and other ancillary purchases. I've been feeling diminishing returns lately, as I grow tired of the blatant power creep and very boring mechanics (gunboat aside).
I've stopped buying altogether recently, and started the transition to the far superior (currently) Armada. Only he T-65 buff can shift my wallet back to X-wing at this point.
About 4 and a half years I think (Wave 3 has just released). I’m very happy personally with the game, but I recognize the argument that at levels of play way above me it’s showing some cracks and (perhaps even worse) some unfun games.
I have no idea how much I’ve spent in actuality thanks to discounts and sales, but at MSRP it is just around $2000.
Edit: I know this wasn’t asked, but I did the math anyway. Been playing Armada for 3 years (since launch) and it’s catching up to X-Wing FAST. Just over $1000 so far. That is also a game that is a lot of fun and was made more so by the recent sledgehammer of a nerf.
Edited by FatherTurinBeen playing since wave 4 came out so about 4 years now.
I'm kind of split on things right now. Overall; I still very much enjoy X-Wing. Our local league has 11 players in it, a group of 6 drop in/out HotAC players and a nice gaming area; great bunch of people and a good diversity in list building. We have a mix of competitive minded folk and casual folk. However; I'm finding the tournament scene worse than ever. Most of the time they're fun affairs with a good bunch but in the last year or so I've seen a massive uptick in salty and WAAC players. My 3 least enjoyable games of x-wing ever were at 2 large events last year, I even won 2 of those games but they were just so not fun dealing with someone who takes plastic toys that seriously. Recently I've stuck to small local(ish) tournaments and my enjoyment has been much greater.
I'm a little frustrated at FFG's policy of release something then either nerf it or buy another fix for it later but it is what it is and I accept that as part of my experience.
Ever time I start to feel a little burnt out; I go play some Blood Bowl, Imperial Assault or Batman Miniatures and I find when I pick up those dials again I'm back in love. I'll probably be playing this game until the bitter end but I do have my reservations about FFG's ability to manage this game long term.
For the bonus question; I have no idea!!!! I own at least 1 of everything and often multiples. For example I have 3 Falcons, 5 X-Wings, 8 TIE fighters etc. Including ships, templates, cases, card sleeves, travel money for events, the amount I've spent on running local leagues/events; we're talking thousands. Must be somewhere in the £3-4000 mark.
Bonus question!
Since Wave 3 circa 2013

March of 2013. So 5 years
Been playing 1.5 years-ish. I got into it right as wave 9 was dropping.
I, not knowing any better about power creep, actually went through and bought everything that was released before my time in xwing. Right now, I’m missing the resistance bomber but otherwise have at least 1 of every expansion (couple of ships I have 2).
I am actually pretty happy with the game state for the most part. There are some high end un-fun lists to play against, but they can be beaten if you play better than your opponent does. I may not like how some of the collection is obselete, but I can get them back on the mat through HotAC and even epic play at times (my last epic I had not one but two bwings our on the mat).
I've been playing for about three months. Collecting the minis for about a year.
Happy with the game right now? Most lists, sure. Meta lists? Hades no.
Bonus: No idea, but way too much considering I never fly 90% of what I have.
Edited by Alpha17I've been playing since about Wave 2, sometime late 2013 or so. First tournaments were around Imdaar Alpha - I really wish they still had those style!!
I've been very happy with the game throughout. Its just such a cool game in all forms! I've played at Adepticon twice now and worlds once. Even at that upper tier in "bad" metas I still enjoy the competition and the game. Meta lists are always tough, but I like to try and break them with homebrew stuff. I realize I'll probably never be one of the folks in the cut, and that's okay. Casual x-wing is by far the MOST fun.
How much I've spent? Ooof. Thousands. I'd say the list of products I own only one of is under 10, including all the epics.
Edit: Just got a 5 year reminder from Facebook about some X-Wing memory, so make that early 2013
Edited by jonnydI've been playing since Wave 1.
I'm current meta is OK; it's not the best it's ever been but certainly not the worst.
Wave 3 meta was probably my favorite.
3 weeks. Casual player and we don't really fly meta list just stuff we bought that week or what we find fun to fly. My current list has some serious hate towards it. I've watched it wipe a full health poe in a single turn. Haven't really played any sort of tourney yet but have tried to pick up a few games at one of the flgs around town.
As for what I've spent it's close to a grand between X wing, legion, and armada in the same 3 week span.
2+ years - I got my TFA core set before the rest of wave VIII was released.
I am not a competitive person so I don't really care about the competitive scene - I show up just for an opportunity to play!
I have at least 1 of every expansion ![]()

1.5 year or so.
Very happy with the game.
2 (or more) of each smallbase ship. 1 (or more) of each largebase ship. 1 of each epic. Love the plastic ships.
Play all factions, mostly play jank lists or counter lists, or my own take on the meta (=super-jank, I guess).
Prefer the tournament scene. Won 3 smaller tournaments (18+ people) but never won a systems open (200+) or regional (64+). Usually reach top-8/16/32 but then I get knocked out in the first eliminationround ?
Edited by RedHotDiceStarted fall of 2013, so about 5 years.
I love this game. But I only care about it as a beer and pretzels game of Epic proportions, so current meta balance does not concern me. To me, the game improves with every wave because I get more options.
Since I only play Epic, I have multiples of everything, including all the Huge ships.
The amount of money I have spend on this game is high. Very high.
Edited by Darth MeanieFive years, four months. I started in late December of 2012, though I didn't play in my first Store Championship until early 2014.
I'm not at all happy with the direction of the competitive scene. I lay that about 40% at FFG's feet, and about 60% at the players'. The player-base has changed pretty drastically, and the change is accelerating. Casual play -- league night, Objectives play, Epic play, HotAC -- is still fantastic, and it's where the "magic" of the game now lives for me. Competition is now solely for the sake of competition, and if I have a fun game, that's an unexpected bonus.
Counting accessories, it wouldn't surprise me if I've spent $4500 on the game. I own about 130 ships, and I have a lot of disposable income, so I don't really have to budget myself the way I used to. The downside is that I've made a lot of stupid purchases. (Frontline Gaming FAT Mats, I'm looking at you.)
I've had the game for 2 1/2 years, roughly December of 2015, but for those first two years I probably played on average once every 3 weeks. After a year I meandered alone into a Regional Tournament and played first tournament going 2-4, and had a fantastic time. I got a taste for the competitive scene at that point and got to play in a couple more tournaments. When I finally got Mrs. Rick hooked on the game I started playing a lot more, about 6-8 games a month now.
I am real happy with where the game is, actually. That's probably because in my local meta you don't see a lot of abusive lists. I tend to just adapt to whatever and be happy that I'm competing and not mowing the lawn or something. I guess if everyone was running the same thing, it would suck - but that is not the case where I am at.
I've bought nearly every small and large based ship so far, and spend a lot of money on 3rd party stuff, and I'm even a Mynock Squadron patreon. I have no idea how much money that is and I don't want to add it up.
Born in the never ending fires of Wave 11.
I am playing for 3 years now. I am a competetive player so I will always adapt to the meta. Sometimes the meta is more fun than at other times, but it is a living thing that changes a lot with every new release. The game is not healthy at the moment when it comes to balance, but that does not stop me from having fun.
So LT;DR: 3 years. Happy.
Playing for two years, only play the Quickdraw Faction. Bought my Raider exactly one week before the old Palp Nerf.
Not happy with the state of the game, though it is better than last year.
Biggest complaint: The top meta ships for Rebels are WAY too easy to fly and/or have trivially easy abilities to use. For example:
Miranda, No Counterplay: Got into range 1 of Miranda through great maneuvering? Congrats! Now eat a 4 dice PWT attack AND a Sabine Bomb. Her ability synergizes too well with multiple problem cards (5 dice Harpoons, TLTs). I think it should ONLY be usable in-arc, with her primary. No K's should have PWTs.
Lowrisk, Too EZ Mode: I wonder what action the Wookie will take? REINFORCE. REINFORCE. REINFORCE. REINFORCE. REINFORCE. REINFORCE. REINFORCE. REINFORCE. There is NO meaningful decision-making when it comes to Wookies. Their dials are WAY too good for a ship with a 180 degree arc. This ship is the most skill-less hunk of gosa in the verse. I hate this ship, hate reinforce in 100/6, and hate people who fly them. Ideal but unrealistic solution: Give wookies the Lambda dial. Actual Solution: Drop attack to 2 OR remove EPT from all pilots.
Nym, Too Versatile: This abomination of a ship really wins the award for poorest ship design since the JM5K. Huge upgrade bar, tons of easily abused combo-tastic slots, AND WHY IN THE LOVE OF GOD DOES IT HAVE AN EPT??? PS 10 Nym should NEVER have been a part of this game. Remove EPT from all Scurrg pilots, problem solved.
Fenn, Too Powerful: Another ship that should NEVER have had an EPT. PS11 Coordinate is really, really dumb. Combined with the Ghost's Engine Upgrade, it removes a ton of counterplay options from your opponent. I don't mind the Sheathipede in other ways (like Stressezra), but PS11 Coordinate Fenn is WAY too much for the power curve of this game. Remove EPT from all pilots, still a great ship. Problem solved.
Ghost: Lets be honest, TLT spam isn't fun. Honestly, Phantom and Phantom II should never be allowed in the same list. FAQ to make them mutually exclusive. You either get Fenn/Ezra OR double-tap TLTs. NOT BOTH. Ghost is fine otherwise, it just gets inflated because of the current state of combo-wing.
This current cadre of non skill-expressive ships bums be out. Tier S Rebels are too easy to fly, too easy to implement, and too combo-tastic for most lists to stand a chance against. While I'm happy that multiple Rebel archetypes are having success, I'm disappointed that the list building for X-Wing is so much more important than good flying. Most Rebel lists currently have a playstyle of: "Don't crash into obstacles, vomit a ton of red dice at your opponent in any direction, and fall back on too reliable defensive abilities when you get caught out."
We have a ways to go until this game is balanced.
I have been playing since 2016.
I'm pretty happy with the game. It isn't easy to keep things new AND keep things in perfect balance, but I do think there are a few things that can make the play experience less than fun. But, I'll also say that there is enough out there to counter almost anything someone throws at you.
Wave 3 and I haven't played since the WI regional, I'm a competitive player but the game's no longer in a place I want to play it.
I have been playing since Wave 1 hit shelves (5 Years).
I am more unhappy with the competitive game-state than I have been in the past, though for granularity, I think that starting with Wave 8 the competitive game has been pretty miserable, and it's one-part very problematic designs and combos being released into the meta and one-part X-Wing's popularity having moved it closer to a "solved" game where almost everyone at a tournament is flying some variation of the same 3-4 archetypes, making events very boring.
That said, I still have FUN playing X-Wing in the Epic Format, where the larger board and points-totals tend to make a lot of the most problematic stuff at the 100pt scale wash out. Though, it's also worth bearing in mind that Epic isn't a hyper-dissected and analyzed format, so that probably helps keep it more novel and fun with people bringing the casual stuff they want to fly. Also, with Epic, lots of stuff dies each round, so even if you lose odds are you killed a fair amount of ships in the process, and it's always fun to blow stuff up. In 100/6, it's pretty easy to lose and not even kill anything, which can make that kind of loss feel a lot more miserable.
About five. In Wookiee years.
Playing since Most Wanted. Rebels and Imperials disintrest me. Have spent MSRP or slightly less (Support your FLGS today!) on one of each Scum pack, doubled up on Lancers, Jumpmasters, Fang Fighters, and IG-2000 (obviously...), havent purchased the Kimogila yet.
Local Community: Nice, low key, smol. I appreciate them.
Tournament Scene: I'm comfortable with imbalance. It's been a long time since I put my warpaint on, but that's life. *freeshrugs*
Forum Community: Steaming cesspool. No change there.
Overall: I love it.
I've been playing for about a year now and over all I am happy with the game. I've spent... more than I'm comfortable admitting (1 of each epic and at least 2 of every small based ship and at least 1 of each large based ship) I just started getting into the more competitive side of things and I just don't think it's my cup of tea, but because of it, I've been exposed to a lot of what I've seen members here complain about*. I still love playing the game even when I'm getting my aft handed to me
* TLT and bombs DEFINITELY need a mechanics rework of some kind.
