poll: how long have you been playing?

By Vontoothskie, in X-Wing

if people could please respond with how long theyve played AND whether they are happy with the game in its present form.

im curious if there is a correlation between the 2

bonus question if people feel comfortable: how much have you spent on x-wing?

I've been playing for about four years now and am generally happy with the game.

Been playing since the December after Wave I dropped, which I think was 2013, so 5 years. I’m very unhappy with the state of the game. Casual play is pretty fun, but competitively both the game and community have gone steadily downhill (IMO).

How much? Too much ?. At least one of every ship, up til G4H.

I've been playing for 5 years.

I have enough of each ship to field the maximum number of ships from the cheapest pilot in a 100pt game, with some extras, like 5 TIE phantoms, 12 TIE fighters, etc.
So... a lot of ships.

I've spent most of the last year working on a homebrew mod. When the balance of the mod started to settle, and the games started being more fun playing the mod, I've drifted away from playing the base game. I guess it's accurate to say I'm having more fun with the mod than I was X-wing, I wanted to use some of the really cool mechanics they came up with for later waves with my original models. I lost interest in regular X-wing after really fluffy squads started to disappear in favour of efficient ones. Nail in the coffin was probably too many games against jumpmasters.

so, I've since been having a grand time making lots of mistakes and a few good ideas in reworking the whole cardset from scratch, with the benefit of hindsight and lots of people helping me balance it! Sometimes I get accused of just being salty, but all I really want is that feeling of genuine excitement from playing a list with 9 hull again, or from when X-wings felt like medium tanks. Every patch the mod gets better, simpler to play, more polished, and more people join in to help. Autoloading in vassal is coming out soon, maybe someday we'll have it well balanced enough that it's a genuine alternative to try out for most players. Not as a replacement, but just a fresh take on the game that keeps them from burning out of regular official x-wing like I did.

so i should probably answer my own questions lol.

ive been playing about 3 years

i am very unhappy with the game state(though i love casual homebrew)

my collection is around thousand dollars worth of stuff. im incredibly frustrated that 800 dollars worth of those ships will be 1 shot or are otherwise so behind the power creep as to be only playable against unskilled opponents.

January 2014 or 2015, don't remember which.

I'm happy with the game. Outside of the occasional store tournament or micros, I don't play competitively so all the salt passed around here seldom applies.

I been playing since about wave 5 either late 2014 or very early 2015.
One of my favorite wargames, was either this or Wings of Glory and X-wing was far more accessible.
Unsure on how much I've spent, though I try to make sure I buy ships that I will play. Most of my X-wing I have sort out the cheapest prices as I do with all my games.

Favorite ship is the ARC-170.

Late 2014

Not very happy with the balance, mainly because iconic ships feel very weak.

Huge Empire/FO collection (1 raider, 2 gozantis).

Apparently, somewhere around four and a half years. And I have less than 20 games under my belt, still. Good lord.

Since wave 5.

I own at least one of each expansion pack (including upgraded dials, epics, and aces, but excluding the dice pack). Total 99 ships for a total estimated cost of 1800€.

Quite unhappy with the game. I liked the release of the GUNBOAT, but I have played just a couple of games in the last year due to the game being won or lost at the squad building stage even in my local casual meta.
The repainted packs promise bringing their issued ships back to the competitive level, but they have been consistently failing at doing so. Rebel Aces, Imperial Aces, the supposed bomber fix in Imperial Veterans, Guns for Hire, Scyk fix in C-ROC, etc are, mostly, a waste of money if you don't care for the cards that you get to really use with different ships than those they came with. Not looking forward to buying another U-wing as part of Saw's Renegades.

Since Wave 4

Not that happy with the state of the game, be it too many NPE elements or overly clunky and non-intuitive rules.

My local Meta has pretty much died, though if I travelled I could find a competitive meta 30 minutes away. (But I’m more of a casual player)

As too how much? Pretty much two of every rebel and imp pack until the latest wave and at least one of each scum.

I played my first 100pt game just after the deadeye nerf for jumpmasters came out.

I love playing: casual, competitive, homebrew, epic, themed. Official tournaments or just at home. I took Porkins and chums to Yavin!

Ships? Almost 200. Most second hand.

Just over 1.25 years

I am fairly happy with the current state of the game, but not thrilled

I've spent... more than I should have, but much less than if I had gone to the bar every league night.

In X-Wing since December 2015

The game has it's major issues but is still the moste enjoyable mainstream game on the market.

I spent about 350EUR not considering ships I have sold later.

Since; Day one. And i love this game now more than ever (maybe more); it's constantly in a state of flux and what is top could be the bottom when new waves or FAQs and nerfs come out.

I love problem solving; and that's all the current meta ever is a problem that requires solving.

Wave IV came out just after I started (Defender!). So whenever that was?

I'm pretty happy with things.

Since December 2015

Like (not love) the game state. Better than triple boat era, thats for sure.

4 and a half years. Mixed feelings.

Love this game. Avoiding Meta, 100/6 and Tier list. Epic. Team Epic. Cinematic. Custom Rules (hidden upgrades, Fixes, etc.

Very bored about meta competitive play, playing with "obscure" ships. X wing without X Wings or Tie swarms.. Simply NOT in my house.

I am on the boat since wave I and pretty happy about the game. I ve been long enough to remember TIE swarms destroy the Falcon and people complaining that elite pilot squads are a waste of points!

I am sad about the way this community is acting though and skip reading most of the threads lately.

I don't think the game has any serious problems other than FFG listening to whiners and releasing too many erratas for my taste.

Since most wanted came out, I've mostly just got Scum ships (and a couple of E-wings). I'm happy with the game but then I only play casual games with friends so it's never a highly competitive thing, I doubt I would enjoy a tournament to the same level.

I've been playing since late 2014, starting playing just before the Decimator and YT-2400 were released. So just over three and a half years.

I'm pretty happy with the game overall - I'm enjoying playing it as much as ever, and the UK tournament scene is incredibly busy. There's a couple of things that annoy me, but overall the game feels like it's in a very good place.

I've got no idea how much I've spent on the game at this point, as I've picked up a moderate amount of my collection second hand. However, I've got at least one of every ship (including all of the Epics) that have been released, and multiples of most. That implies A Lot Of Money...

Almost 3 years to the day. Bought a core set, Y-Wing, and TIE Interceptor with some birthday money in April 2015. Best decision.

Since day one.

I wouldn't say I am unhappy about X-Wing in its current state as it has always been unbalanced. (with solid balance always within reach)
But I find myself drifting away from the game as I am getting tired of flying the few Tier 1 ships available to each faction, using a limited selection of viable upgrade cards.

I do have fun playing casual games from time to time but even there the imbalance rears its ugly head.

Sidenote, I also have mountains of upgrade cards that aren't viable - what is up with that?

The alternative to flying Tier 1 ships is flying meta counters and risk running into non-meta lists in the preliminary rounds (which has happened so many times now).

Then there's the mirror matches, of which I've played so many.

My biggest issue is that - when I can consistently cruise to victory without practice, using a netlist, against someone that has been playing variations of the same (but slightly inferior) netlist for a year - and anyone else not flying Tier 1 ships for that matter, then I know that competitive X-Wing is not for me.

Yes the Sheath/Fennipede is broken, yes Miranda is broken, yes TLT is vastly superior, so is Harpoons, yes the Falcon was broken once, as was Dash, as was Poe, as was the JM5K ToiletTerrors(tm), as was the pre-nerf decloak, etc. etc. etc.

And that won't change in the near future - and imho, would require a rework of the game from the ground up.

TL:DR

X-Wing casual play is sort of fine, but it is not enough to keep me interested.

Since the TFA coreset, November-ish 2015.

While I still like the game, the idea of going (or organizing) tournaments is wearing thin. The community has gotten more salty and is far less about fun and more about winning, at almost all costs. My oldest son has been playing as long as I have, starting when he was 5. Seeing the saltiness of people losing to him, or the shady stuff people try to pull on him not to lose to a kid pisses me off. I've never pushed my younger sons to try because there's no way I'm bringing them to deal with it as well.

It's just a game and too many people are not treating it as such anymore.

Since January 1st 2013 (a little over 5 years).

I played my 1400th game yesterday (all logged in boardgamegeek).

It's hard to estimate, but probably closing in on 2k in purchases.

I still love the game. As long as there is some form of agency and strategic thought in a game, I'm in. Yes, some unfortunate matchups won't do that much, but they're eclipsed by minimally nice enough games.

I've always known you can't only play tourney style games; yes, they're exhilarating, offer a competitive adrenaline kick, but I've always thought you need to nourish yourself with games outside of that context often enough, or you'll go down a path of frustration, either for yourself or caused on others. 100% tourney will drain you. I've seen a good chunk of players not understanding this needed balance and quitting the game forever.
