When does adaptability take effect?

By badgerclaw171, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Adaptability is a 2 sided card that changes your Pilot skill by one. One side being a positive 1 the other side being a negative.

When does adaptability take effect?

does it only apply at the start of the game can you change from one side of the card to the other During the game. So You want to have a Lower pilot skill during the activation phase but a higher pilot skill during the combat phase could you do that?

Preciate any input...

You place the ship with Adaptability at the pilot skill level shown on the card. After the ships are placed you then decide to show the +/- side. You can't decide to flip it during the match.

I highly recommend to download and read the latest FAQ. It explains how the cards work in addition answering a lot of questions and contains the cards that have been arrested.

Thanks for your input I'm just messing with a Ship building App I did not have FAQ Handy And I Never used adaptability the for.

This isn't quite accurate - you set the side of the dual card (and its effect happens accordingly) when the ship with it equipped is placed during the Place Forces step. So, if two ships with Adaptability are placed, the first has to set its PS before the second is placed.

This.

Dual cards can be set to either side when deployed, but you can only voluntarily flip them mid-game if the card itself gives you a means to do so (like Arc Caster or Intensity)

Is there any card that does that now?

You're right. I need to watch auto correct better.

Flips mid game?

The two mentioned in the post you quoted...

This is what happens when I post before morning coffee.

I meant to ask if there was a card that allowed you to voluntarily change your PS level mid-game. I know of other pilot abilities (Mux and Roark) and damage results (Damaged Cockpit?) that changed PS either temporarily or permanently but wasn't sure of a voluntary change mid-game.

Sort of, via Decoy and Swarm Tactics.

Thanks! Wasn't thinking in those terms.

I used Swarm Tactics to troll an all ace Imperial build a couple of years back before Cracken's ability was changed. Really ticked off my opponent.which was good.

Also Roark Garnet.

Theoretically, you could use Chopper to discard VI or Adaptability in the middle of a game.

Yup, although this has the potential to totally break things!

Also Epsilon Ace

One thing to keep in mind that a lot of the ship building apps get wrong, is that Adaptability has no impact on the pilot skill with regards to list building. This means you cannot, for example, use Adaptability on Snap Wexley in order to equip Black One since it does not actually increase his pilot skill until after he is placed on the playmat.

Indeed. The way I always explain it is that a dual-sided card is essentially added to your squad 'on its edge' - showing neither face 'face-up' and counting for nothing but its squad points cost until you deploy it. At that point, let it fall onto one side of your choice and follow the rules as shown on the card.

This can result in you deploying 'before' what your PS value then appears to be from that point on, but that's no different to Hyperwave Comm Scanner.
