Hi, New here. Could somebody please explain how the pilot card works. I know about phases but not sure how this works.

Is this correct?

If the defender rolled say 5 dice 2 blank 2 focus 1 hit. I remove the 4 dice in question from play? otherwise what do I change them to? If not whats the point if they can be modified after.

So per the timing chart... when the defender rolls their dice, the attacker has the chance to modify first. So after they rolled those 5 dice.... you then can use Lieutenant Kestal's ability to spend a focus token to remove those 4 dice. You do not change them to anything, they are simply removed from play. This is the only time you can use his ability.

By removing those dice before he can modify them, you're denying the defender the chance to modify them with a focus token or some other ability.
