Rebel Vehicle Commander - speculation thread

By Shanturin, in Star Wars: Legion

There is a lot of guessing who the third Imperial Commander will be, but me being Rebel through and through, I don't much care :P

So far, all Rebel commanders are very trooper-oriented. Luke's My Ally is the Force specifically targets troopers and gives them extra dodge, and while Return of the Jedi is not trooper-specific, it's special ability to drop suppression when Luke activates only matter to troopers. Son of Skywalker - well, Luke's a trooper himself, so, yeah. While we don't know Leia's and Han's 3-pip cards, both No Time for Sorrows and Diversion are similar to Luke's 2-pip in that they give both orders and special rules to troopers only. As far as special rules go, Han and Luke only care about themselves, while Leia's Inspire and Take Cover are also all about infantry.

This makes me wonder if we'll ever see a dedicated vehicle commander for rebels and who that might be, lore-wise? And, if not a strictly vehicle-focused then perhaps someone to support combined arms approach, similar to Veers?

As far as Rebel commanders in cannon go, I'm afraid we're no exactly spoiled for choice and we'll more likely see someone along the lines of saboteur/demolition expert (Melshi, Pao, Cassian, Chewbacca?) or more commanders that focus on infantry units (Madine, Page, heck, even Cracken as he's cannon). Since most rebels associated with vehicles are starfighter pilots or fleet officers, what would be your choice? And what rules would you expect from such a commander?

I am sort of hoping the Rebels stay trooper oriented.

...but I won't cry a tear... *if a they come up with something atmospheric*.

As you say, the lore is a bit bare for ground troops if they don't resort to silliness. Even the comics tend to go to fighter-support (what I've seen of them). I know there are some mega tanks, but the trick will be bringing them in to a casual audience.

What I'm hoping for is *new cannon*. Get a story. Get some media (comics, shorts, bloody prose if you have to), and play it as a campaign. Good release strategy, add to the cannon, have yer wookies riding on your new tank, and you're off.

There a many great options for generals from the rebel army:

Rieekan, Madine, Dodonna, Garm Bel Iblis,...

but I don't remember one with a strong relation to vehicles.

In lore General Dodonna defected from the Empire after being one of the first ISD captains in the entire Empire. He brought with him valuable data and schematics for numerous Imperial ships and weapons.

This could be parlayed into a vehicle commander, as he has had a long time to learn and study about Imperial forces. Perhaps he allows his forces to target vulnerable points on vehicles with easier or more crits. Maybe his knowledge helps him deploy and control his vehicles to minimize danger from Imperial weaponry.

Something involving crits or critical effects would fit with his appearance in Armada. Not sure that's important though...

Edit: in Empire at War Garm had a massive tank vehicle. Don't think it's canon but there is the precedent.

Well, I play Imperial so Rebel commanders mean little to me. :P

However, I don't really remember a 'tank' (read vehicle) commander for the rebels, maybe this means Rebels get a more generic commander first. The rebels didn't have a lot of smaller vehicles in the movies so who knows.

What ground vehicles do the Rebels have?

It's a loooongshot, but they could bring the ski speeders in since they were from a base set up by Bail Organa just prior to the GCW breaking out. But even that would probably be Speeder 1.

Veers feels like a missed chance for a commander in a tank. Maybe we will get more versions of the same commander since ffg has the dot rule in the named characters ala X-Wing.

Wedge could work as a commander, since the game has uniqueness indicators. Rogue Squadron has a long history of EU mixed theater and special operations in Legends. Beyond that, the Rebels simply don't have any planetary vehicles with GCW screentime, because they don't fight the GCW as a way of occupation.

I don't think we will get a vehicle commander, ffg has said that they want to make sure that the rebellion and the empire feel different gameplay wise, I think the empire will be the main vehicle army, and the rebellion will remain the rag tag group.

This is the second time I've seen reference to No Time for Sorrows; Was it leaked somewhere?

Cracken perhaps, most people remember him from the AT-PT escort in Rogue Squadron.

"Feeling different" between rebels and imps doesnt mean "Only troop commanders for rebels"

Troop/Vehicle commander is such a broad topic, were bound to get one eventually

Been mentioned already but there is Garm Bel Iblis's Gargantuan from Empire at War... but like the name implies it is rather large.

Yeah, but having one side be almost exclusively trooper focused seems pretty imbalanced in a game that has a huge emphasis on trooper units. Vehicles can't pick up tokens. Speeders have to time capturing points pretty precisely to be effective.

Bob the Mos Eisley Landspeeder Dealer.

Seriously though, Chewbacca can drive anything inc. AT-ST.

Dodonna would be your combined arms go to.

Chewbacca right? I mean, mechanics and engineering and vehicles are meant to be his thing right?

...how about good old LUKE in the speeder?...

Captain Rex feels like an obvious choice for a Commander, and especially one associated with vehicles. He has a broad range of combat command experience, and is canonically associated with tanks and walkers. He's active during at least the early days of the GCW (I haven't seen the last season of Rebels, so I don't know if he survives).

They retconned it to point out he’s the bearded old guy on Endor.

I had heard a rumor about that, but hadn't known for sure if its official. Honestly, that make sit seem even more likely we might see him in the game.

Absolutely 100% official and canon now
