It has happened again..... no-one showed on X-Wing night. We had a large community of X-Wing players for quite some time. In the past year it has started to drop off. In the last month it has all but disappeared. A large amount of grumbling about power creep, net lists, and list building becoming more important than flying. In the past month (four game nights) we have had three nights where no-one has shown up to play -- one night two people played. Shadespire, 40K, Legion is now occupying the tables at our FLGS. The power creep has just frustrated too many players. The titular ship of the game hasn't seen the table top in months. The biggest complaint has been the power creep that has made some ships obsolete and some overpowered. This game has gone from a cash cow to collecting dust on the shelves. It needs new life breathed into it. Make X-Wings relevant to the X-Wing game again. It has outgrown it's rule set. A change is needed -- no new players coming in, and old ones moving on to other games.
Rules update anytime soon?
The honest answer? When FFG feels like it. We have no clue when it may be, the best hopes being alongside the next new release... Which we also have no solid info for.
No news on when there might be an FAQ or new core set to update the rules, but the x-wing is getting a shot in the arm very soon (at least, in x-wing terms, probably two months at the earliest) with Saw's Renegades. We're not sure exactly what it's going to look like yet, but it's coming.

At our FLGS the veteran playbase seems to be moving on to Legion but there are a quite a few new players getting into the game. It's not always very rewarding to fly against them at first but we put a lot of effort into helping them improve and it's a good opportunity to dust off some of the oldie lists.
Generally FAQ updates come either alongside a new release or right after the end of a tournament season. So maybe something after worlds in a couple weeks but don't hold your breath.
If you're looking for a more widespread overhaul like a 2.0 then who knows. That would be like a year or two down the line from now if it was already in the works and I'm not aware of any specific reason to think that it is. Now they have been talking about this "hyperspace report" on the fron page. I'm not aware of any leaks regarding what that's gonna be about but maybe something interesting? Anything I could say would be 100% speculation so who knows.
Do what we did. Set up fun matches that emphasize something other than playing tournament-style meta matches. We have our recurring league where each player can play and score up to seven matches, never against the same player, and any player is not allowed to use the same pilot card twice in the same season. Bonus points awarded for one ship per faction that we'd like to see more of on the table (last season it was B-Wings, TIE Interceptors, and Misthunters). Or play a round of matches where absolutely no ships can use turrets, or just Wave 1-3 ships, or whatever.
If you don't like the state of the meta, stop playing the meta.

Funny how everyone told me 40k was the worst on the "power creep" side... from what I heard your army can suddenly be dead in the water and a waste of money...

If there is one thing that will drive me out of the game it would be a similar scenario. If there is a 2.0, I hope it doesn't make our current collections worthless.
Power creep in 40K has always been addressed when a new set of rules came out -- about every five years. X-Wing is well past that and has added so much more that doesn't mix well with the original boxed set (which gives you a damage deck that you aren't supposed to use).
Have any other sites experienced a dramatic decline in the past few months? Our community has fallen apart. Rebuilding it will get harder the longer we wait for something to revitalize the system. If a 2.0 exists, I would like to see it sooner rather than later.

You can use the old damage deck, its just rarely done.

I was about to say that...
And 40k do exactly what I call "power creep" having new rules or new "units" that render old stuff totally obsolete... It may not be because the new stuff is inherently better, but the rules nerf the old stuff so the new is power creeping over...
The end result is the same, old stuff is unplayable and you must buy only the new stuff...
In fact, x-wing is way better then 40k on this level... everyone that played 40k and now play x-wing told me so...
Is x-wing balanced right now... maybe not. But they release expansion to try and breath new life to old ship.
That and FFG don't release anything that overrides and old release and makes something legally unplayable.
Glued a unit of 5 plasma marines together? Ah well, new rules say you can't do that anymore so that was a waste of money...None of that in X-Wing. They'll change cards and occasionally ships but never to the point of "of yeah you can't legally take that x-wing now".
As somebody very new to the game, I feel some of the frustration. I picked up an Imperial raider, was using the Emperor card and get told thats not the correct ruling. So you go to the website and theres loads of cards changed.
Not that I ever plan on playing in tournaments but If I didn't know about all the changed cards I could have looked quite the idiot if I had gone to play this card one way and that card the other.
They should rerelease the changed cards in a set with a new ship(s). Make it faction specific.
Yay, another thread of "the sky is falling."
We have new Xwing players we are teaching at the FLGS I hang out at. We mix up our weekly meet ups with 100 pt dog fights, Epic once a month, HotAC once a month.
Be creative. And if you have players that simply don't want to play anymore, find another group that does or play something else for a while.
There is no new rules update or FAQ planned prior to worlds.
