Local Players

By The_Asir, in Star Wars: Armada

Hey I'm considering starting playing Armada but I don't know if there will actually be anyone to play against in my local area. Anyone know the best way to find out where and when people might play in Yorkshire.

Usually the best bet is going to the LGS and talking to the owner and asking when he sees people playing. Then pop in one of those days to say hi, introduce yourself, and maybe get a game in.

First impressions last a life time. So fly casual, play to have fun, and observe the golden rule... “Don’t be a d!ck”. Follow that and you’ll find people to play.

And that said, don't be afraid, because Armada communities tend to be super nice and laid-back.

Depends where in Yorkshire.

@Mad Cat is York based

@ceejlekabeejle is Sheffield based

Also look out for a local facebook page. We have one here for Montreal for example

With the discussion of using facebook to find groups, I refuse to use it. Are folks on alternative platforms that I could get behind? Facebook, Twitter, Google, and the like I just will not use. They don't play by their own rules and abuse their customers. I'd like to get into communities as well, but won't compromise my privacy to do it.

Then the forum is the best you'll get I believe...

Yep. Or create an online persona purely for social media with no RL connections.

Otherwise yeah, it’s hard to community without some sort of interaction.

I mean here in Hothgary I have a suite of people I need to personally email when I drop a tournament schedule or anything like that.

whereas the majority can see the Facebook event link and discussion.

its... a pain in the **** for me, but I understand while people are like that.

I have a few friends that do this for university actually and it works very well for them. Allows for booking reservations with certain restaurants also, or staying in touch with gamestore news and gamestore managers

Whereabouts are you based my friend? As @Ginkapo says, I might be able to point you in the right direction.

I'm sorry my friend if you think it's limited to Facebook, Twitter and Google. I also honor your commitment to stay away from Google if you truly do, because it's everywhere. But yeah, your ISP is collecting data on you, your credit card and bank are collecting data, your GPS is collecting data. Heck I wouldn't be surprised if FFG wasn't collecting data. These days, if you're on the web, data is being collected. And while I can understand apprehension against it and what it *may* be used for in the future (currently it's almost exclusively used for marketing data - what ads do you see), if you're truly concerned, then you need to go off grid.

Just post a flier declaring that you're a cool guy looking for some other cool guys who want to hang out in your party mansion. Nothing s-e-xual, but dudes in good shape should be encouraged. The fat guys should be able to find humor in the little things, but I'd definitely declare that you're not looking for anything s-e-xual.

I'm well aware of this, and I minimize my exposure. The sad fact is to participate in society means you compromise your rights to a certain degree. The social media platforms take that abuse to a whole new level though, and I don't participate. :)

Thank you for all the advice guys. I'm currently based out of Leeds but that may change in the coming months. I'll give what you guys said a try.

These days you pay with your data for the 'free' stuff. So unless you payed with actual money, you can be sure youre 'spied on'.
