Magic question

By yrtalien, in Genesys

Going over Genesys and I may have missed something...

Does a Wizard start with a specific number of spells or can he create them on the fly (general system, I know setting rules can change things).

Say I have a guy who has all 3 magic skills can he augment, attack and create barriers of all variations on a whim?

By raw when you have the skill as a career skill you can use any of the spells available to that skill whenever you want. Obviously if you’re less skilled and have a low characteristic then the things you can actually succeed at will be less

Strain is the gatekeeper here to keep casters from going hog wild. And, it's good to remember that doing a task with a spell is generally harder than doing the same task via mundane means. But you are in fact correct - a character with all three magic skills could do as you suggest, but the real power is that it's not spells that are pre-built, they can be made up-on the spot!

I'm playing a character as you've described tomorrow, I'll report back if anything interesting comes out of it.

The trade off, obviously, is those skills won't be other skills. So, while you can create a Barrier of Wind that launchers Fireballs while giving you water lungs, the first locked computer terminal you find, you're suddenly the scene from Zoolander 1. "The files are INSIDE the computer?!"

I believe typically you'll have a character that will cast magic using either Arcane, Divine, or Primal. In your setting, you can certainly allow for a character to pick up all three skills though. One think you'll want to remember is the Knowledge skill. The ranks you have in Knowledge will matter when casting as well because it will make the extra effects like the Blast quality on a magic attack action that much better. No ranks in Knowledge means a Blast 0. Where 3 ranks in Knowledge means Blast 3, for example.

It's very free form to cast spells and as was mentioned above, strain is the limit here as to how many you can cast in a given day or encounter.

Zoolander is the epitome of a hyper-focused character, I'm going to keep that example handy!
