Basing and Firing Arcs

By emmjay, in Star Wars: Legion

Ok, so logical question. When basing your large figures with firing arcs, how much are you keeping shown? I ask because some of the people I have seen post images of their vehicles have fully based over the firing arcs leaving little know, some have left them unbased, and others just have little 'tic-marks' to indicate where they meet the base edge. Unless I missed it somewhere I haven't seen anything official from FFG.

I ask because I am getting ready to base all my models and I want to know how much to base so that they will still be tournament legal.

I cant speak for tournaments as I dont think there is any official ruling regarding basing, conversions and such.

But most people you encounter will be perfectly satisfied if there is a rough way to estimate the firing arcs as this generally isnt milimeter precision anyway. Accidental bumps and movement over uneven terrain and such are likely causing more inaccuracy in the game then this.

Many will indent lines into whatever basing material they put on their base and while these lines might not be perfect lines as they will have jagged edges, they are straight and visible enough that any way you can measure firing lines will be as accurate as on a naked base.

I DO recommend making some form of marking on the actual base and not just on the rim of the base though, but as long as the marking you do is straight and follows the original lines, anyway you choose to mark it will be good enough for 99% of players. And the remaining 1%....Its just part of life.

But as for tournaments, again I must say I have no idea. I cant imagine any tournament organiser would prohibit anyone basing their vehicles but exactly how well the marking must be made....Difficult to judge I guess.

Possibly we will see a third party template (or maybe even an official FFG one!) specifically used to determine firing arcs on vehicle bases that have none vidible. Somethin you put into the movement "gate" that shows the arc.

Some already out:

Sorastro's vid on the AT-RT has a great bit on how to imprint the firing arcs on a vehicle base. Basically you mark the edges with a paint mark (which you can paint over later) and then use that and a ruler to imprint the arcs into your basing material before it fully dries.

Maybe in the future FFG could release the base with 5-10mm taken off the sides as to make it clear about the front, sides and rear arcs.

I, personally, find that kind of thing rather ugly in appearance compared to other things that can be worked into the basing itself without being obtrusive
