I has Gunboat

By Baaa, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Having recently bought a Gunboat I now own 4 ships; a Defender, a TAP, a TIE Advanced and a Gunboat.

So, I'm looking for some help in building a Squad which includes my shiny new ship.

This is what I have so far.

Darth Vader(35) [Darth Vader(29), Veteran Instincts(1), Engine Upgrade(4), Advanced Targeting Computer(5), TIE/x1(0)]

Countess Ryad(35) [Countess Ryad(34), Twin Ion Engine Mk. II(1), Juke(2), TIE/x7(-2)]

Rho Squadron Veteran(30) [Rho Squadron Veteran(21), Lone Wolf(2), "Mangler" Cannon(4), Linked Battery(2), Xg-1 Assault Configuration(1)]

Cheers

With the Rho, I might rather go for either some sort of Deadeye ship (Harpoon Missiles, Guidance Chips, either Extra Munitions, Flechette Torpedos, or XG-1 and Flechette Cannon--for a 28-29 point ship), or a HLC carrier. Trick Shot and HLC is 31 points, and could be built by dropping TIE Mk.II from Ryad.

I guess I'm just not really into Mangler Gunboats (unless you're really fishing for crits for some reason). They lack the 4th die of a Missile or HLC gunboat, and they lack the ability to fire-while-Disabled of a Flechette or Tractor Beam. But that's just me.

It'd also be worth considering Lone Wolf, Intensity, or Push the Limit on Ryad. Juke is OK, but with PS 5 being somewhat low, I think there's a large enough chance that you'll want to spend your Evade token before you get a chance to shoot, in which case Juke does nothing. Lone Wolf rerolls are going to be quite nice, though. Push the Limit on Ryad is classic, and a slightly cheaper Deadeye Rho makes room to afford it (and TIE Mk.II--a must have on PTL or Expertise Defenders, a nice perk on others, depending on local meta). Intensity is budget PTL, since it's both cheaper on it's own, and allows you to drop TIE Mk.II. You'll often enough have an unspent Focus or Evade to flip Intensity, but I'd almost never deliberately not spend a token to flip the card. With the limited portion of a dial an /x7 Defender can use, having a barrel roll is a huge boost to maneuverability, while still letting you keep the Focus/Evade defenders want to take every turn.

Try this out, you got the ships/dials but probably need to proxy a few cards. Very fun and effective against almost everything. 98 pts :)

I also tried swapping to Inquisitor in Ryad's spot and found that while I think it's a good list, it just isn't for me. I haven't figured out how to fly Inquisitor consistently yet.

A third that I haven't tried yet would be Vessery instead of Ryad. Vader should be able to hand out plenty of target locks, Vessery gets up to PS8 instead of Ryad's PS5, and ends up with a 2 point bid. You could also switch to Long Range Scanners on the Rho to better ensure the target lock for Vessery.

Darth Vader (29)
