Do you want a board game or a miniatures game?

IA is definitely a board game and that's one of the reasons why I never really got into it. I like board games, but for me they just have a much shorter interest curve. For me, a $90 board game will last a few sessions, then someone may dredge it up later.

Legion falls more in line with games like 40k, Warmachine, Malifaux, etc. This is something that I cam dump more time into for the cost both on the hobby and gameplay aspects.

Ia Skirmish is definitely not a board game. However it is worth asking if there is an active Skirmish community near you or not. If not then yes, the campaign plays like a board game and that is all you would be able to do.

We'll agree to disagree. IA Skirmish was 100% board game for me.

I don’t think you’re going to be satisfied with any answer here. People can give you their preference, but no one is you. I think the best advice would be to find an flgs that either has a group of each or open copies for you and friends to try. Ultimately it’s going to have to be your decision from there.

Will IA get canceled after worlds this year?

They just got a new box expansion announced. I expect them to emphasize the campaign part more going forward, but it is unlikely that they will drop the game entirely.

IA just got a new expansion announced Friday.

Well, I was going to lie to you but then I saw that you demanded an honest answer in the thread title. Drats, foiled again!

A friend has IA and we never got through a starter campaign. It is fun to play. I am a long time wargamer and like the miniature side, but play a lot of board games that have more depth (and rules) than IA. So my choice would be Legion, but really depends on what you are looking for in a game.

Do you prefer apples or oranges? Not trying to be trolly but that is my feeling on the two game system. Id never give up my friday night IA campaign for a fun gaming night with friends but legion ticks all the boxes for casual play for me.

Legion, I have already played more games of Legion than IA and a game that goes un-played isn't all that much fun.

If you like Warhammer, get Legion. If you like board games, get Imperial Assault. Otherwise, both are star wars games and you can't go wrong.

I think Star Wars Imperial Assault is a great starting point for getting into the hobby both gaming and painting wise (the latter if you so desire). I am biased because this is the one that got me back into the hobby. There is an interesting story line and a character progression system in the campaign. You can also enjoy the skirmish mode for quick player vs player games. Painting wise you start off with Heroes, troops, droids and creatures. A way to test your skills with a variety of Star Wars characters.

At this point there are a nice amount of troops, aliens and creatures as well as Movie Heroes and Villains to choose from that are available to add to this game. With the announcement of the Rebels expansion and figure packs this game is obviously alive and kicking as it was feared Legion was putting the nails in Imperial Assaults coffin.

Also for what you would spend $$$ to create an 800 point game as well as what you might put into it by creating a gaming table you could possibly add a few expansions to Imperial Assault. The app for Imperial Assault also makes a single player game possible for those times you really want to play but can't get a group together.

I enjoy both games as I was actually building 3D skirmish maps and creating custom games for Imperial Assault as well as trying to figure out a way to take the grid off the table for Imperial Assault at the same time Legion was announced.
