Adapting Legion Units for IA

By dysartes, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Admittedly, the Tyrants of Lothal announcement has kinda defused the need for this thread, but what the heck...

While I'm sure we're all fed up of Legion taking up the vast majority of FFG air time for the last few months, it has introduced a few new units/equipment choices to the Star Wars setting. I thought it might be interesting to spitball some ideas for deployment cards - Campaign or Skirmish - in order to use these models in games of Imperial Assault.

By my reckoning, and as of today, I make these the new options:

  • 74-Z Speeder Biker [Imperial]
  • Stormtrooper with HH-12 (I think that's the guy with the shoulder-mounted bazooka-looking thing) [Imperial]
  • General Veers [Imperial]
  • AT-ST Upgrade cards with secondary weapons? [Imperial]
  • Snowtrooper with T-7 Ion Disrupter [Imperial]
  • Snowtrooper with Flamethrower [Imperial]
  • AT-RT (with weapon variants as upgrades, or different profiles?) [Rebel]
  • T47 Airspeeder (might not work in IA, though given the AT-ST does...) [Rebel]
  • Rebel Troopers (renaming the current Rebel Troopers to Fleet Troopers) [Rebel]
  • Rebel Trooper with Z-6 Rotary Blaster Cannon [Rebel]
  • Rebel Trooper with MPL-57 Ion Grenade Launcher [Legion]
  • Fleet Trooper with MPL-57 Ion Grenade Launcher [Legion]
  • Fleet Trooper with Scatter Gun [Rebel]
  • Rebel Commando (or is this just a new name for Alliance Rangers?) [Rebel]
  • Rebel Commando with DH-447 Sniper Rifle [Rebel]
  • Rebel Commando with Proton Charge (again, could just be the Rebel Saboteurs under a different name) [Rebel]

Feel free to add any new options I've missed to the list - I'm assuming that the named characters not included as OK staying with the versions of them we already have, though I guess a General Han Solo could be interesting.

Did some brainstorming, and the following might be a starting point for the Snowtrooper with Flamethrower ...

Snowtrooper with Flamethrower
Keywords: Trooper, Heavy Weapon
Cost: 6 for two, 3 each
Health: 6
Speed: 3
Defense: Black
Attack: Ranged, Blue + Green

Action: Environmental Recovery Gear (as Snowtrooper)
Action: Flamethrower (as Captain Terro)

Surge: Pierce 1
Surge: Weaken
Surge: +1 Damage
Surge: +1 Damage

For Elites, make the following adjustments:
Cost: 8 for two, 4 each
Health 8
Replace "Surge: Weaken" with "Surge: Focus, Weaken"
Replace "Surge: Pierce 1" with "Surge: Pierce 2"
I'd consider giving them Efficient Travel from the Elite Snowtrooper, but I think the card is full with Environmental Recovery Gear & Flamethrower

What do you think?

If you use efficent travel like keywords it won't need much space.

Howewer, without mounted they will need to move to flamethrower, which means that they won't recovery gear and/or won't live long enough to start focus attacking(elites). Too many special actions.

I would make a new flamethrower:

2surge:After this attack every unit within both 2 space of the target and 3 spaces of you suffer 1 damage and become weakened.

You may not target enemies 4 or more spaces away.

Replace surges with pierce 1, Focus and +1 damage,Weaken

Action: gain 1 movement point and attack a weakened enemy, having priority target and +1 surge. If it was defeated friendly troopers within 1 space recover 1 or discard 1 harmful condition and you gain assault for this activation.

The elite's flamethrower only needs 1 surge and has better stats and its Flamethrower also makes targets suffer 1 strain

I'm not going to lie, @NagyLaci - this first draft may just have been a mash-up of Terro and a Snowtrooper - I was trying to avoid re=inventing the wheel ;)

You make a good point about the Flamethrower ability from Captain Terro being tricky to use if you don't happen to have the Mounted ability.

Ion weaponry is an interesting one - it's a type of weapon I'd generally want to work better against Droids and Vehicles than against "normal" models. Maybe use it to strip focus or power tokens from them, deny the option to attack or remove an action, something like that?
