What can Cool do for you?

Advantages do not do anything unless you have the hard boiled talent, which lets you heal wounds for advantages.

Regarding triumphs, we have a house rule at my table that players can use triumphs to grant either an additional 2 successes or advantages where there is no other use for triumphs.

It seems counter-intuitive to this system to not have any effects for advantages. Even if it's just tie-breaker in a skill challenge (like initiative) it always gives some boon.

Well, it's already been necrod so:

That's on me but as I was using advanced search to gather info on Cool, I couldn't let the Sabacc portion of the discussion remain as improperly defined.

Also, as the OP suggests, there isn't as much info about Cool or the other passive/reactive skills. Having the post get updated isn't a bad thing :)

In the CRB under the section for Cool, it states that you can spend a Triumph on a Cool check to recover 3 Strain.

And how would you describe advantage? It always feels wrong, when the player rolls 1 success 5 advanage and I tell them it's 1 strain. :(

I agree. A houserule would be to say that you recover strain based on the highest number rolled (in this case, 5), rather than based on Success.

The CRB describes using advantage to notice details, but it's referring to other Cool checks, not recovering Strain. You could try to adapt that, but most of the time it wouldn't be useful or really make sense.

I'm toying with the idea that strain heals other party members, as you help them calm down. Maybe 1 strain / 2 advantage.

Alternatively, pass on Boosts.

Before there was a talent that did basically this, I stole a houserule that GM Phil uses. On cool or Discipline checks to recover strain you can heal 1 strain at the cost of two advantages, in addition to one success for 1 strain

I don’t have much to add. Just think it’s cool 😎 that this thread has resurfaced.

I tend to treat 5 or more Advantages as sort of a mini-Triumph, if used as a whole and not split up. I would let 5 Advantages be used to recover 3 Strain.

edit: Except... you can already use 5 advantages to recover 5 Strain... so I guess I mean recover 3 Strain in addition to other effects..? Sure, why not. But only for Cool checks, of course, and probably not if already using the advantage to recover strain.
