Worlds will be fun this year

By Sybreed, in Star Wars: Armada

I expect the Empire to do better than last year and the lists won't be filled by Rieekan aces and 3+2 archetypes. We'll finally see some diversity and the fact that players won't have time to practice the perfect fleet might mean we'll see very diverse types of stuff.

****, we might even see Interdictors!

I am super excited to see what the lists are looking like!

Really interested to see what impact Raddus/Pryce/Bail have on the game.

I think we'll see a lot of Raddus honestly, his effect, while simple, has a huge impact on a game.

Didn’t they put out a streaming schedule yet?

I friend of mine and I played a game earlier this week, and it was maybe his second time using a Raddus fleet. I think his thoughts on it are spot on: Raddus is very easy to use, and his usefulness ranges from "ok" to "awesome!".

Hopefully! Armada made a lot of really nice adjustments recently, and these recent trends might make the game very interesting to watch on stream as well.

The Avenger is bar-none still the best ship in the game right now, especially with new refit options available. That extra-soft nerf bat it got hit with hasn't really affected its performance at all, in my opinion, and if anything, I think the Avenger fleets are in a stronger position now than they were pre-FAQ.

I'd expect to see a lot of Avenger (probably with Sloane most of the time, but Motti, Jerjerrod, and Thrawn are all very good choices too) and I will not be shocked at all to see the "Super Turtle" Interdictor builds doing well.

All's I hear is Imp wishing. The Rebellion will, as always, reign supreme.

I am curious how many players wholly binned their intended fleet after the FAQ (either because it wouldn't/couldn't work as intended anymore or just as a meta call) versus how many felt comfortable with whatever they'd been planning.

I think we are going to see a lot of very diverse types of Raddus lists, that is for sure!

I know I did. I was working with Imperial Squads (not relay gozantis, but quasars) and found that while first turn was often uneffected, the relay nerf meant that in later turns I lacked the positioning flexibility to chase and clear targets. It completely obliterated my entire fleet and I had to start over from scratch.

Agreed. Absolutely a huge seismic shift in the way squads are handled. Back to the basic limits and man, it definitely impacts it.

I mean, I played Rhymerballs almost exclusively back in the pre-relay, pre-gozanti days. TBH relay kind of took the punch out of the range limitation from the Rhymer nerf since the Imperial Carriers are cows that are next to impossible to reposition after the alpha pass and unlike rebels, they often times don't kill the target in 1 turn because they simply don't have the nuke power of Yavaris Bwings.

Now with no rhymer and no relay which helped cover up for the navigational deficiencies of the carriers, it is almost impossible to keep squads on a ship target for more than 2/3 rounds if they are intent on escaping.

Don't even bother with Gozantis. With no defensive titles (BH is idiots defense and QS helps arc dodge) and how reliable red dice are now they are instantly vaporized in range.

I really wish I could disagree with you that BH is idiots defense. I do so wish I could....

How many times I thought my flotillas was about to die or take damage, only to realize "oh wait I have BH get rekt"

Eeeehhhhhhh......

Does BT Avenger + Quasar + X just get tabled by an ET CR90 ramming swarm, now?

Inquiring minds would like to know.

My Hardened Bulkheads MC80 would also like to know for... reasons...

Assuming a Sloane fleet, I'm not confident in your chances against MSU overall. Still quite workable against other fleets with expensive ships, though.

Agreed. Sloane is generally strongest against fleets with a lot of points tied up into one or two big points pinatas.

Rhymer may see a return to competition for certain fleets thanks to his ability to further extend the threat range post-relay-nerf. Relay was more instrumental to his disappearance then a few centimeters of range.

Sounds like a lot of players think the FAQ will help diversity.

Maybe it might be so fun that they do all worlds after a FAQ lol. (I hope not)

caveat to the optimism: we might see a lot of Raddus, he's very good.

A month before Worlds is a great time to introduce a new FAQ, beaten out only by "a month before Regionals." There are opportunities to study the data from several months of competition play in multiple regions, which helps identify when a particular issue is the result of a lucky break or a single player outperforming the average list archetype as opposed to an actual widespread issue. It also identifies when a particular dominant fleet archetype is under-performing in a given region.

In actual "serious" competition, I expect that we'll see Raddus explode at World just because at the moment he doesn't have a particularly prominent counter outside of himself. If that is fixed, we'll see him drop off a bit.
