My guess is they want to do their upcoming release presentations on their terms and stream it themselves instead of a convention setting where people take poor pictures or videos during the presentation with cell phones. At least it is a step in the right direction.

Seems likely, although it's a little curious they're not waiting for the fourth. I mean, it's only three days later.
Maybe they don’t want there need to get buried amongst the other Star Wars news on the 4th.

Considering that Veers and the Snowtroopers are meant to release this month, we'll still probably get an article or two talking about them.
I'd also expect the information for the Imperial Spec-Ops Unit towards the end of this month.
I believe the reason that they've chosen the 1st of May is because of that "Something Big" the Armada players have been waiting for.
If its a Legends ship, it could cause confusion if they release it on Star Wars Day, as Disney seem to make it a habit to release new canon information on that day.
