Has anyone experimented with an AT-RT without a hard-point weapon? I guess the idea would be to get it into melee so it can use its 3 red dice to do some damage. Impact gives you some play on at least one critical (realistically) and its surges also turn into criticals. This gives it a bit of oomph against armour.
The pilot still has his rifle for a few shots on the way in, its two white dice so not great but once again surges become criticals.
The argument is: "Why not just take a gun and shoot it until you get into combat?" A valid point and arguably a better play. I think the only knock against that is points cost. The cheapest gun - the flamethrower - is 25 points, and by the time you get in range one you may be in combat (or close enough to it) already, and that gun is really only effective against infantry. After that the other two weapons are more expensive and one begins to concentrate on it being a gun platform with melee being a secondary consideration.
2 AT-RTs with no guns wheeling around the flank and crashing into a unit and clawing them down. 110 points. 6 red dice is what Darth Vader hits for (obviously less impact and no pierce) which as we know is painful. Is it worth it? Would anyone consider it?
