I'm new to painting, and up until now I've only painted Stormtroopers. I decided to try my hand at painting one of the rebel troopers as Captain Rex. I'm super happy with how he turned out...that is until I put the varnish on him. The varnish I used is Testors Spray Lacquer Matte, but as you can see in the photo he came out a lot more shiny than I would have liked.

Not sure if I used too much, or if maybe it's just that brand.

Any ideas?

Also, what can I do to dull him a bit? Is there anything I can do? Please tell me there's something I can do.

How long has this had to dry? It's possible it still needs time to set.

If you are still having issues, you can always go over the current coating with a different brand of varnish like a Vallejo matte varnish. (In fact, for minis that are handled a lot, it's a good idea often times to go gloss + matte application, as gloss has better protective coating and matte is the finish many people prefer.)

Testors Dullcote is my go-to anti-shine.

Dullcoat is far less likely to cloud over.

testors 1260 is my go to. I usually don’t want the entire model glossy, but after the testors Matt varnish I will brush on Ardcoat to gloss specific parts.

Varnish is Varnish.

The amount of sheen refers to the way the final surface dries and reflects light. So a Matte finish disperses the light and makes it look dull, while a gloss allows the light to reflect in a manner that makes the surface looks brighter. Now, because the surface finish does this, a matte over a gloss will make it go matte.

In terms of protection the idea of Gloss+Matte is nothing more than the idea that 2 coats is better than 1.

So if I reapplied the matte varnish that I used it could possible take the shine away?

Ive painted for a long time and I recently swapped to Testors Dullcote for Legion. I am a bit surrpised to see some of my work looks a bit shiny after the Dullcote?

IMO you could matt over it yes, thin coat, then more if needed...rather than a heavy coat.

Everybody has already covered this, but the bottom line is if you think it’s too shiny, cover it in another layer if something dull. I have yet to finish painting a Legion mini but for Imperial Assault I have really liked the Army Painter anti-shine matte varnish. If you can’t find this near you they have it on Amazon. I got a small can of testors dullcote when I ran out and found it much glossier. I’m going to experiment and see if I like the way the testers works on my stormtroopers and maybe I won’t have to ardcoat a shiny layer on top.

edit: by the way, I think I your paint job looks fantastic. I hope I can do anything half that good for Legion.

Unless that photo was taken right after you sprayed the lacquer, there’s no way you used dullcote.

Testors has two clear lacquer products that come in almost identical cans. Confusingly, they are both called clear coat. One is dullcote, one is glosscote. The cap on the dullcote is translucent . The cap on the glosscote is transparent .

As has been said in this thread... if you already used glosscote, you can just spray over it with dullcote with no issues at all. Just let the first coat dry completely before your hit it with the second.

Hmm. You have a pic of the product?

Also, you don't need a lot. Just a couple of squirts from a few angles. You shouldn't be holding the spray button down for more than literally 2 seconds as you sweep the spray from one side to the next. You're not supposed to turn ol' Rex into a glazed donut! ??

I can't find I product called " Testors Spray Lacquer Matte" on Testor's site. There is "Testors Spray Lacquer, Glosscote 1261T " and "Testors Spray Lacquer, Dullcote 1260T". All the IA minis I've done with Testors Dullcote are much flatter then the picture you posted of Rex.

Can you post a picture of the can you used with the cap?

You sound horribly obnoxious telling this guy that you know what he used and he got it wrong.

This is what he likely got. It’s advertized I think on Amazon as “matte.” It is dullcote and when I used it I got the same shiny results in the ogre below.

I think you're being overly sensitive. If I was trying to be obnoxious I wouldn't have tried to differentiate products to help the poster avoid mistakes at least one other person made here recently. It's an easy one to make, it's easy to correct. My attempts at being obnoxious are typically much more transparent.

Lacquer tends to be a rather strange beast, it isn't acrylic and it isn't an enamel. I have had an instance where if you do a layer of each, lacquer/enamyl/acrylic, the paints go "soft" so be extra careful.

Thank you! That’s exactly what I used. The label on the back of mine says ‘’matte” not “dullcote”. Maybe the wrong label got put on?
