Looking at Dials During Activation

By shaunmerritt, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello all,

Had a question and could not find an answer in the rules/FAQ/etc., but its very possible I missed it. Is there in the rules against looking at all your dials during the activation phase? I.E. Can you look at ship B's dial while activating ship A? or Can you only look at the dial of the ship you are activating?

This came up last night and we were debating if it was a rule violation, bad sportsmanship, or nothing wrong with it at all.

Players are not allowed to look at each other’s facedown maneuver dials, but they may look at their own dials .

This is not specific to the planning phase. You may check your own dials at any time.

I'm looking for where it was listed for citation, but it is legal to review your dials at any time. To be sporting it is suggested you pick them up with 1 hand only though, to prevent the impression that you are changing the chosen maneuver.

That is kind of where the debate was because it made no sense to look at the dial unless you were trying to change something. One person said constantly picking up it could shake the chosen move out of place.

Simply reminding yourself what was on it in order to plan repositioning. I know I frequently have two equally good moves in mind and forget which I picked.

Or just to check you have the right dial in a tight furball.

Always let your opponent know that you want to check your dials, then do it where they can see you. This is a very good idea when you're flying a swarm and need to activate them in the correct order!

If they're looking down at their ships and look up to see you replacing your dial on the table they can be justifiably annoyed and think you've changed it.

Be polite and transparent. And everyone can be happy.

I just say when I am about to check my other ship's dial. Especially if the ships are the same pilot skill.

There used to be a reference to this in either the FAQ or the Tournament Rules (before they become "regulations?")

Basically it stated that you MAY look at your dials for any of YOUR ships, but that you must inform your opponent first so that they are given the opportunity to observe you looking at your dials.

Everyone I have ever played with before and since has allowed it as long as you are being up front. Sometimes you may forget which maneuver you did, because you had more than one decent option... OR you want to make sure you are activating the correct dial first or in the correct order.

Just be up front and polite and give your opponent an opportunity to observe what you are doing so that there is no reason to think you are doing something tricky.

This. When you have 4+ ships on the board, you usually have multiple ships with the same PS, but there is generally a specific order you need to move them in to not crash into one another.....
