Control! You Must Learn Control.

By Astech, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm looking for fun lists to take in the ongoing Vassal League. I'd like to move up again in this season, so fun + competitive is the goal. I've been getting a lot of mileage out of control lists, so here's a few lists I've made:

Imperial Gun(boat) Control:

Rho Squadron Veterans x 2 (26)
Harpoons, yarrr!
Deadeye
Guidance Chips

Nu Squadron Pilot (28)
Harpoons
Ion Cannon
Linked Battery
XG-1
LRS

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (20)
Death Troopers
Lightweight Frame
TIE Shuttle

Totalling 100 points.

Death troopers don't work against most turrets, except Ghosts, where they should work exceptionally well. The jousting efficiency of the list is pretty massive, and Harpoons gunboats love to see turrets trying to kite. low agility aces like Miranda, Nym and Poe hate the super-accurate Ion Cannon, and everything else is going to despise having to shoot a 6 hull, AGI 3 bomber first each game.

Uncontrollable Scum:

Viktor Hel (31)
Harpoons, me hearty!
Stealth Device
Scavenger Crane
Deadeye
Munitions Failsafe
Guidance Chips
Vaksai

Asajj Ventress (47)
Predator
Shadowcaster
Latts
Glitterstim

Unkar Plutt (22)
Cloaking Device
STA
Primed Thrusters
Cikatro Vizago

Totalling 100 points.

Unkar is, by far, my favourite ship in the game. For 22 points, he turns token stacking aces into gibbering madmen sitting on rocks, ruins the activation phase for your opponent, and is also AGI 4 until he doesn't want to be any more. Asajj dishes out rather accurate shots, in addition to stress, tractor control and a very durable frame. Viktor dishes out more stress, harpoons jousting lists, and reloads his harpoons every time something dies.

The ultimate turn is double-stressing with Asajj and Viktor, then tractoring said ship onto a rock, then ionising them and their whole team (EMP Device courtesy Cikatro) mostly onto rocks or facing the wrong direction. It's astonishingly easy to pull off when your opponent refuses to move towards you at all...

So, which of these two control lists do you think is better, and what changes would you make?

Scum seems way better imo. I would use Pattern Analyzer on Unkar to guarantee you can pull off STA even after a red (a GREAT trick). I would also PLAN to ditch cloaking device - he does not need to shoot. Giitter might be a nice replacement. I think that'd put you a point over, so you could probably ditch Harpoons on Hel - really, he just wants to stay alive. Asajj can also move to PTL, it's VERY fun on her.

I've played maybe 10 games with the scum list since my last post, and it's certainly done work. With Unkar, the ability to barrel roll on a reverse move, or after going over debris with Primed Thrusters, is as good as PA in almost all situations, andworks against stress-based lists like Strezra. Unkar definitely needs to shoot - it may not look like it, but a 2-die + focus attack does a damage a turn against low agility targets, and when they're focused on Asajj, there's no need to be cloaked. I nromally use the cloaking device to get into position - sometimes multiple times a game. Then only swap when I really want to EMP.

Hel's harpoons are just as crucial. Without them, an opponent can literally ignore then, as Asajj is a way bigger late-game threat. So harpoons that synergise with his already auto-include scavenger crane make him a very annoying ace.

PTL Asajj, while great on paper, is awful in the current meta. The sheer amount of stress and ion control shuts her down immediately. I've found Predator asajj to be very useful, as she's not limited to green maneuvers, and with glitterstim can afford to lose action economy for a turn or two anyway.
