This is my first post here on the forums. I just recently started playing X-Wing and have been enjoying it a lot! However, as a college student on a budget, it didn't make sense to spend my limited gaming funds on an expensive game mat when I could get a few expansions instead. I just picked up a 3'x6' piece of black felt for about $4, and that was a better alternative. Originally, I tried a few rattle can tricks to get the effect of dust and stars, but it wasn't very impressive to play on. So, last night I broke out my airbrush and picked through a few colors I had laying around and threw this together in about three hours. It has a bit of a fantasy theme to it. I really liked the results of the blue gas cloud. I don't think I would go with a red dust cloud again (going to stick with blues/greens), but I already have a red starfield scene in mind with that color. This mat will have to do until the weekend... I used up all my white! This was done with just a single blue, red, and green, mixing in black and white (and a little yellow on the planet) in the cup to get the shades I was looking for, so I'll also have to pick up some more vibrant varieties of blues, greens, oranges, etc.
Overall, I'm happy with it, especially since I haven't picked up an airbrush in a few years, and it was a great mat to develop some skills with working on black felt. Plus it looks a little more exciting to play on than just a flat black mat. I think I have two more solid design ideas in mind for this weekend, too, gearing towards some more realistic-looking results.
