Chewie is definitely sitting at the controls.
Just going to leave this here. . .

also, Chewie is standing inside the cockpit in your gif. chewie is taller than Han, so why are you saying he wouldnt fit?
compare this cockpit set to the mock up above. The exterior set is not the same and obviously smaller

The escape craft is definitely thicker than the escape pod in ep 8. At least enough room to rest on your side and not have to remain prone or supine.
Why couldn’t Lando have included an extra big escape craft in his Batchlor Pad Party Ship, especially one that requires a few lovely ladies to spoon up against him in tight quarters after getting all hot and sweaty crawling through the access hatch?
Seems fine.
You can hang some parts out the floor.

The secret to the Kessel Run, Chewie got some extra speed going Fred Flintstone style.

dude check the measurements yourself if you wont take someone elses word on the math. its literally 1 yard thick over most of the length, which is the same measurement as the pod rey climbs into.
also, there is no access hatch. cannon blueprints of the falcon and in film shots of that section of the ship show that there is not a hatch there.

Well, I’ve never seen any blueprints of the Falcon that actually made sense. What ever they have in this film is CANON and happens 10 years before the first appearance in ANH anyway, plenty of time for those ‘special modifications’ by Han.
Can we see the FAQing film first before we hate all over it?

May I ask where you are getting these measurements?
