Odd discovery between Troopers and Airspeeders

By Irokenics, in Star Wars: Legion

Just something i found interesting the other day after playing my first tournament.

So i had a squad of basic Stormtroopers on top of a building, they could see half of an airspeeder which also had a dodge token. They were not in range to shoot anything else so i did Aim and Attack with them and scored exactly 1 crit.

Airspeeder can't dodge it or apply Heavy Cover (Cover 1 + Light Cover) and also failed it's save.

Whilst on another table, similar situation except there was a HH12 in the squad. All the blacks scored hits and one of the whites had a crit. The Airspeeder negated all the hits with Heavy Cover and the dodge token before Impact 3 can occur, failed the save on the crit.

So yeah, its interesting in that scenario where its double the points but the same outcome.

Thought it was an interesting point to share.

Sadly the crits are really important and really random.

That's sort of the beating heart and soul of Legion.

Supression mechanics, offensive and defensive dice, the order pool, rolling off for tied initiatives, semi-random objectives, requiring a full action to untap cards, crits ignoring cover and dodges, etc; - Legion is fundamentally a game about managing and reacting to chaos.

The recover action on uses one action in an activation, correct? So in theory as long as my guys aren’t suppressed and lose an action I could use recover then fire my HH12 in the same activation.

How did the Airspeeder get a dodge token? I thought vehicles couldn't take that action.

Dodge, RRG pg. 26

Quote

Units can gain dodge tokens that allow them to
cancel hit results during an attack.

• When a unit performs a dodge action, that unit
gains a dodge token. The token is placed on the
battlefield near the unit leader and will remain
with the unit as it moves around the battlefield.

In agreement with @NeonWolf here, but very curious as to why you thought an Airspeeder couldn’t take a Dodge action?

That is the correct use of the recover action.

Still learning rules but how does cover apply before the impact3. I would have thought those 3 hits were automatically turned into crits? Anyone got the reference for this?

RRG page 14.

step 5 of the attack process is Apply Dodge and Cover, which is before step 6 Modify Dice which is where Impact occurs

Ahhh cheers. Thanks for that.

I think the main reason is that I've only played one game with an airspeeder. :)

It was unfortunate but it happens. The rocket might have been a dud, or hit something along the way, or been fooled by some form of countermeasure.

Do it a couple of times more though and youll start to see the...impact.....of the rocket launcher :)

You can buy one lottery ticket, I buy three tickets and we can get the same outcome, but this will not say that we had the same chance to win.

As an example:

The probability to have one or more crits with 4 stormie is nearly 42% (44 points)

The probability to have one or more crits with 1 HH12 stormie is nearly 33% (32 points)

Without doing the full math you can see that the points for the HH12 are very moderate for the crit probability and in this calculation is the impact keyword and the opportunity to attack two targets with one action not included.

The dice order always messes me up slowly remembering with out having to look it up.... surges before dodge and cover, modification after.

Vehicles can't Stand-by. Maybe that was the source of the confusion?
