COTD #6: Yorr

By player2072913, in X-Wing

" Command station, this is ST-321, code clearance blue. We are starting our approach. Deactivate the security shield. " ―Yorr

Welcome to card of the day!
Today's card is the Lambda-class Shuttle pilot Captain Yorr, with the ability:
- When another friendly ship at Range 1-2 would receive a stress token, if you have 2 or fewer stress tokens, you may receive that token instead.

What do you think of him? Is he weak or strong in this meta? How do you build him? What squads would you use him in? Any neat interactions to note? What strategies should you use in a game? Any rules questions you have? How common do you think he'll be after the release of the reaper? Anything at all you want to say about Captain Yorr, or the Lambda in general, this is the place!

Very strong right now, a key component of one of the big imperial lists, and a very strong ability in general - clearing stress from PTL users is hugely valuable.

Whether he gets rekt by the Reaper will depend a LOT on the Reaper's dial and pilot abilities. If it can be brought more into a strong combat role with Jam and a strong dial (and maybe LWF) I suspect Yorr will decline a lot, but if it's more limited either by points, or dial, or Jam being weaker than hoped, he'll stick around. I suspect we'll continue to see him fairly regularly just because of that stress blocking, because stress AND Jam will be a thing, and that's a horrible, horrible thing.

I did a few games a while back with Oicunn, Daredevil, EU, Title with Inspiring Recruit riding in it. Naked Yorr other than collision detector, and the OL with ASTS and Adv Optics.

When I could properly line up my ramming with Oicunn, it was pretty entertaining

I adore Ramming Speed Oicunn, but he's always let down by the simple fact that if you miss the ram, he's then a very expensive PS4 with no pilot ability.

Don’t miss the ram then.

(j/k I know it’s not possible every round)

Easier said than done with an opponent of roughly equal skill who knows the trick. Not driving into his movement area is pretty trivial.

I played him a lot for a while and getting the ram off is super satisfying (Especially with Intel Agent and BoShek also equipped, doubly with a conner net and EM, NOBODY remembers the deci even has those slots) but comparatively rare.

But that Yorr guy tho

Way to stay on topic.

Linked Battery being ‘small ship only’ is such a slap in the face to the Lambda (and the Firespray). Would it have pushed the palpmobile into OP territory to get a bit of actionless dice mod?

And those red hard turns!! That did lead to an excellent article ‘back in the day’ on how to fly the great white space cow though.

Yeah, that was such a shame, it would have been in no way broken for LB to be usable on large ships. The closest it might have come would be the Aggressor, and they're 50-odd points each and usually getting actionless dice mods anyway so

There's some really interesting cards you could be picking that would get people talking, and instead we get this.

#7 is Rebel Operative?

Thanks for your input into the conversation!

I generate the cards randomly (ignoring generic pilots). The point was to get people to talk about a wide range of cards, not just the best and worst.

Would people be more interested in a different system? Perhaps voting on the next card somewhere. I'm not that good at organising things so I'd be perfectly happy for someone else to take over too if they can do it better!

My Eaden Vrill build would be a lot happier with LB, I know that...

Ah, if the Yorr/Lambda just had a large base dial like a rebel large base ship, he'd be the bomb.

Yorr is a strong and affordable support option for a faction that doesn't have many (yet). The TIE shuttle lacks the ability to take the more expensive crew upgrades and doesn't have many pilots that have support abilities. The upsilon can be a VERY powerful ship in its own right, but is rather costly for a crew carrier with support, so this limits squad options. So far, the TIE reaper pilot abilities seems to revolve around its unique JAM action. I'm not sure how much this will play to squad support.

I still think Lambda pilots like Yorr will still be viable options in the future for those who want to bring a dedicated (and sturdy) support ship.

I vote for Horton, the king bad-*** of EPT-less pilots.

also Marksmanship.

I like these random cards being talked about tho, it’s fun!

Used him in my first list ever. Him and Imperial Boba Fett. Not sure where I was going with it, since nothing on the list stresses either ship, but I've always like Captain Yorr. I also tried to make him a carrier for the Emperor and had two TIE Interceptor doing K-turns all around him (I think I had the Tactical Jammer on the shuttle as well); That was more of a theme list however.

Someday I'll actually use Captain Yorr on a - real - list :)

Rough spot between him and the reaper, and it's ultimately going to come down to the reaper's pilot abilities versus how much stress spam there is

But if reapers get popular, yorr will be less relevent due to jam knocking off tokens without the need for stress, especially since jam can protect you from 'poons or curtail their punch by dropping an opponent's focus

Action jam has a lot of possibilities, as it sort of apes hotshot Fenn albeit to a lesser degree

Jam might be a thing if it reaches out to range 3. Otherwise....

otherwise it's still very good as it makes enemies, at the very VERY least, easier to damage. ****, as I brought up in the kallus COTD, jam makes Major whatshisface very powerful in conjunction with kallus and LWF. That's full mods right there, while your opponent loses one of theirs

the only way it could possibly be not-so-good is if it's range and arc-locked, or if it requires a die-roll

only reason we don't see jam nowadays is because eating your attack to fire a zero-damage cannon/missile is just too steep a cost

I've always been a fan of yorr, especially back in the day with 3 RGP w PTL before autothrusters.

His ability will always make him usable with aces, especially with ptl/expertise epts around.

This squad is one of my absolute favorites, definitely a first pick for pint games:

Prisoner Transport 2515

37 Captain Yorr (24), Rebel Captive (1), Mara Jade (3), Engine Upgrade (4), Ion Cannon (1), Sensor Jammer (4)

33 Turr Phennir (25), Royal Guard Pilot (0), Push the Limit (3), Stealth Device (3), Autothrusters (2)

29 Kir Kanos (24), Royal Guard Pilot (0), Stealth Device (3), Autothrusters (2)

99 Points
