Keeping on topic forum people happy

Not complaining, but I'm not 100% sure you've really got a handle on what "on/off topic" actually means...

I do. But I love driving you lovely kids crazy.

The trailer got me excited for the movie. I see some real Han/Chewie/Lando classic banter which I love.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA - those same critics who near unanimously said Ruin Johnson's The Least Jedi was the best thing sincerely sliced bread?

No the ones I trust hated it more than I did, I'm talking independents here not the ones Brown nosing disney.

Just got a chance to see the trailer with audio (my professors generally frown on me doing that in class :) ).

Wow. This movie is going to be amazing!

Super looking forward to it. I'm also just finally getting used to seeing someone who's not Ford in the role of Han Solo. I think this has potential to be the greatest Star Wars movie ever made.

The trailer is actually pretty cool. Looks an interesting story AND has Star Wars on it.

I'm happy Disney is making these side stories. Let's see how long they can keep the quality making 1 movie/year.

PS: since the hate for TLJ keeps resurfacing, I'm here to say: Good work Rian Johnson. Your movie is not perfect (no Star Wars is), but it's one of the best in the series. (and I hope JJ doesn't undo everything)

Honestly, Disney trailers don't hold any merit for me anymore. Keep thinking of r1 and all the scenes they shot purely for the trailer

I expect this film to play out exactly the same as Rogue 1 and the last Jedi in that it'll have:

1.) Interesting villian(s) hopefully more like krennic, who got a proper resolution, than kylo...who's now just a bad guy)

(Also hopefully in that the secondary villians are more like Vader and tarkin and less like Snoke and...******* hux)

2.) Bland as **** protagonist

3.) Largely superfluous supporting cast, minus one Droid that's actually fun to watch

4.) Beautiful visuals

5.) About half a runtime's worth of movie that could be cut without affecting the story at all

6.) Cringeworthy 'inspirational" speeches or, worse, "humor"

So hopefully more r1 than last Jedi

7.) Most importantly, cool new ships for xwing and Armada

I'm betting that Hux get tired of Kylo's **** and just offs him, taking his place leading the dying husk of the First Order to its logical end, somewhere in a collapsing star cluster.

Actually the scenes in the R1 trailer seem to be part of the original ending while what we see in the final film were from the reshoots.

Kurt Russell played a great Han Solo in Big Trouble in Little China.

Oh oh wait that wasn’t supposed to be Han. Oops.

As opposed to Thor Ragnarok where they actually changed the backgrounds of a fey key scenes, just to keep us guessing.

Something which I had absolutely no problem with; I loved being surprised by a scene I knew was coming.

So basically reverse MCU films and their history of meh villains but good heroes?

You'd think Disney would be able to thread that needle eventually, right?

Disney movies used to have awesome heroes and villains. And they could sing.

Any of you want some NAMES!?

Interesting. We already knew about the Imperial Arrestor Cruiser - not something we've seen in a trailer so far, but from other sources. Likely 'Armada' tie-in, there.

The TIE:Sidecar, though - just going with 'Heavy TIE Fighter'? Well...eh. I've seen worse, I suppose. On the upside, it means that Mk2 engines will definitely be possible for it, as well as (probably) Lightweight Frame.

I like the trailer a lot, and I really want to like this movie. But I'm trying to temper my expectations and keep them realistic. I'm worried we're going to get another Marvel Presents: Solo: A Star Wars Story and get a film like The Last Jedi that doesn't have any idea to keep a consistent tone and overdoes cheap humor.

But, I really do hope I'm wrong. Donald Glover's Lando seems like such a slam dunk for a great performance. So I hate the idea of it getting buried in a bad movie.

I was going to play devil's advocate that it is two different divisions under Disney, but then Ficklegreendice went and did a song and now I just want to see more disney+Star Wars songs/puns.

Sorry to disappoint you. It is L3-37. They even say its name in the trailer. ;)

Tin foil hat time:

L33 can be internet slang for lee.

7

seven has two sllyables.

Bo

Bo has one syllable.

Seven divided by two is 3.5.

3.5

.5 is also two syllables.

Do you see it?

.5 has two syllables

7 has two syllables

Half of 7 is 3.5

half of two syllables is one

therefore:

we can sub L3-37 for Leebo.

L3-37 is new Leebo confirmed.

Like Rogue One, it looks great but the music is terrible.

Thinking on this one, and...ya know...there's times when there is wrong...and there are times when there is wrong .

(Not saying that the issue with the 'Solo' trailer music is incorrect, of course, but trailer music really doesn't say much about a film. Heck, half of the trailer music made anymore is all these guys, anyway . But, rather, that the 'Rogue One' score actually came off...pretty good, overall. Better than John Williams did with TFA and TLJ, anyway...)

Having seen rogue one I can't remember the score at all, same with tlj.

R1's score is pretty good, really. The Krennic and Jeddha/Saw scores are excellent. The only part I didn't really like was the opening title music (which, given what happened in the cold open, seemed a bit cheesy)

My general feeling on the scores of all the recent SW movies (and a LOT of recent movies generally) has been that they've been good but basically un-memorable (even musicals - La La Land left me with basically no memorable songs, though The Greatest Showman was much better on that score, pun intended). And having downloaded the TLJ score for free when it was out for consideration for awards, I'm not really any more taken with it.

I'm in two minds about this to be honest - on the one hand, having a good score that supports what's on screen and doesn't get in the way can really enhance a movie. But having an un-memorable score can detract from it.

There's a whole long discourse about movie scoring and temporary scoring out there in the film crit community at the moment, which boils down to a lot of movies being temporarily scored with older movie scores, then the new movie having a score written to echo the songs from the old one that were in the temp score. Pirates of the Caribbean and Gladiator being the most obvious/well known.

I suspect this is happening a lot with SW movies, not to mention basically all the superhero movies. We've not had memorable novel scores since... PotC/Gladiator, and maybe Duel of the Fates from TPM, I think. I certainly don't remember any novel scores from the 2000s better than those, and I don't remember any of them as well as e.g. the Superman theme, the Star Trek theme, the Star Wars theme, the Imperial March, etc.

I suspect a lot of that has to do with just how much film recently has been remakes and franchises. You don't get original and memorable when you're working entirely to evoke previous iterations of the same.
