Oh, ****. You're absolutely correct. Not sure how I forgot this one.

In Warhorse , the director wanted to have a scene where the titular horse gallops down a trench.
They got images of trenches to see if they could make the scene realistic.
Almost all the images were like this:
So the director just went "Skrew this!" and made the trench a straight line.

Yep. It's almost like having a trench be a straight line would be problematic at best, and easily flanked at worst.
Speaking of trenches, another film I forgot to mention that's pretty good is The Trench .

The french seemingly ignored the dangers of having your defensive line be completely straight...

Actually.... no, they didn't. My apologies if you're making a joke, but this is something I've seen from time to time and is worthy of clarifying/correcting.
The Maginot line was a modern chain of fortresses and minor fortifications that protected the most obvious German invasion route into France. The line was built with the idea of a "defense in depth," and was quite formidable in its time. Far from being in a straight line, the individual components of the fortress were capable of mutually supporting each other. Its goal was to redirect the fighting into Belgium, sparing France the horror of another world war being fought primarily on its soil. At the time, Belgium was an ally and had its own fortresses, so the Maginot line seemingly was not in danger of being outflanked. Political and technological changes would obviously make that assumption an error, but the Maginot line was not "completely straight" as you describe. When looked at objectively, the Maginot line succeeded in many of its primary goals, as the war was pushed into Belgium, and France was not devastated by having a prolonged conflict waged on its soil.
It's also worth noting that the Maginot Line's little brother, the Alpine Line, was remarkably successful in holding off overwhelmingly superior Italian attacks until France was defeated elsewhere. While the Italians were largely the most incompetent army of BOTH World Wars, this does show that the French knew what they were doing when building defensive lines.

How dare you try to get this thread back on topic!
Seriously though, my interest/expectations for Solo have bounced so much I honestly don't know what to expect. Coming from TLJ though, I'm not sure that's a bad thing. At least without expectations, they can't be disappointed.
Though now @Imperial Advisor Arem Heshvaun has me wanting/expecting SW trench warfare, and I'll be sad when that doesn't materialize.
