My online agot card database

By YoungFrankenstein, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

Hi,

As I am learning the cards and the game itself, I decided to create a web browser accessible card database based on Octgn's data.

http://agot.gotdns.com/ (yep, it's running on my computer).

Basically I wanted to be able to quickly find cards I saw posted as part of people's decks, and understand the set/Chapter pack that the card is associated with. There are so many chapter packs, and I'm very dense so I couldn't figure out what came from where. Making this database certainly helped me get a grasp on the basics. Currently my database has a few expansions and chapter packs, some cards don't have text information, and some of the newer chapter packs aren't there (per Octgn).

But I stopped working on displaying the cards because "it's good enough for me", so to speak. If I get positive feedback from anyone out there, I will add features to it. For example, it's meant to be used in Firefox and looks bad in IE. If it breaks copyright issues, then it's back to the shadows--my philosophy is 'try it first, apologize later'.

In any case, the app will later have added a deck builder interface, and import export to csv/xml/octgn feature.

So, feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm going to go ahead and say that this is VERY COOL! This is what Tzumainn's site used to contain, and it's cool that you were able to use OCTGN's files for it. One thing of note I noticed, however, is that partial words don't yield results. For example, if I type "venom," I would normally expect "venomous blade" to appear in the search results, but nothing appears. This is only an issue if I've forgotten/misremembered the name though. All in all this is very handy. Thanks! (I'm actually going to add this site to my signature so that I can find it in the future.)

I am very thankful for this site! Can't wait to use a deckbuilder that I can access with my Mac! And also the import/export feature sounds promising!

Thanks for the feedback. I am glad that this app is not just useful to me. I will keep working on it ;) PS I changed the search, so you can type "veno" now and it will come up with "venomous" results, etc. If you have other ideas about what could be better, please let me know here or to agot.dabbler@gmail

I liek to be able to search plots by their individual values for gold initiative and claim

Hey Lars. I made the order in the front page, maybe a "search drill-down" and "reorder" options later. Thanks all for the feedback and ideas.

Very nice! Clean, nice layout for the results. I like the small images of the cards as it helps me to be able to associate the art with a card to have a better chance of quickly recognizing a card when it is played in a game by an opponent.

Some minor quibbles:

- I really like how you used icons in the card descriptions. For gold cost and strength, however, my preference would be to have the gold coin symbol, colon, and then a number rather than a string of gold coin symbols that have to be counted to figure out the total cost (and same idea for strength).

- Can plot images be oriented horizontal so they don't appear on their side?

Sweeet. Thanks for posting this!

Thanks all for responses!

LetsGoRed,

Thanks for the suggestions. I agree with you about the gold and str icons, that will happen soon the way you described it.

Regarding plot card image orientation, there is a single plot card image that was accidentally oriented in the way that you described, you can see it at http://agot.gotdns.com/index.php?view=dsearch&textsearch=a+song+of+summer&cbname=1&cardtype_sel=5 do you prefer this over the bigger sideways image? I am eventually going to make every card clickable from search results to see more info detail and properly oriented images, maybe that will help.

In other areas, I'm done with the deck builder and export to Octgn, which adds to site functionality. I'm just waiting until I also make a deck import function and card text info pop-ups for deck displays, before I put it all out there.

I do. In either orientation you can't read the text but can read the Gold, Ini., and Claim figures and see the art (so nothing lost/gained by being sideways) and with the horizontal orientation it appears as how you'd look at the real card. But whatever you decide on the plots it is shaping up to be a great tool I'm looking forward to trying out the deck builder feature.

useful stuff! i like it!

maybe you want to announce it also in the general forum. more players might want to benefit from it.

Since I rushed into this, I've been able to clear my head, learn more about the cards, and visit excellent AGOT database apps like Tzumainn's and of course the great expanding AGOT plugin on OCTGN2.

Next: 1, Slowly slowly adding card ratio (from the sets and expansions), flavor text, and illustrator names. 2, Search results need to be more interactive and editable. 3: the deck builder/export/import is a neat little ajax trick, but I think it needs more support (like better search refinement, user accounts, a place to save decks, etc). I will not be updating this thread now.. next time, new topic, dabbler will be done. The suggestions here and via email continue to help a lot. So thank you :) agot.dabbler@gmail.com
