Paints/Tips

By EbonHawk, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

I love looking through at everyone's work, and enjoy painting a few myself! I'll have some pictures up once I've finished the new squadrons...

My question to you all is what paints does everyone use? Brand/Colour and what for e.g base colour, details, engine glow etc

also any painting tips for ships and squadrons, that we'll all benefit from sharing and learning from :)

I use cheap *** craft store paints. Huge variety, best metallics I ever found, and a nice selection of fluorescents as well. The downside is that the pigment density varies depending on the color. Aside from that I use GW washes and glazes. I have also been known to use the occasional marker or graphite pencil for details.

Still use Minitaire almost exclusively, but the thickness of them are a bit inconsistent (some are too thin to easily handle, even in an airbrush). One day I'll graduate to vallejo.

What I use and what I LIKE to use are two different things.

Ny favourite and preferred paints are Reaper Masters Series... for ease of coverage, consistency, colour and thickness... but u have to order them from Texas basically and shipping kills unless I’m dropping a couple of hundred at once.

So really, for the most part, I use Vallejo and Games Workshop. I would use more Vallejo, but up here, they are horribly inconsistent... this is because, y’know, Hothgary... sometimes when a store orders them, they are left for a time frozen while shipping, which messes with them.

At least with games workshop, they are ordered in small batches weekly, so it’s unlikely a whole paint rack will be affected like that, AND their return policy is great... if there is anything wrong, I can get it replaced on the spot... fir the sake of consistency, that is great to me ... but it’s also my primary consideration painting up here where there is never any humidity.

I almost use only Prince August paint. Tried GW some 20 years ago, had a really bad batch and never came back. Some army painter washes and specific colours too.

as to painting squads, Dras did wonderfull tutorials for it, well illustrated.

Here I am...the lazy ***** who paints well and doesn't do tutorials.

Basically you wanna use hollowed out q-tips, shove your ships in and then assembly line paint and produce.

I use Vallejo colors, and I prime with tamiya light grey primer...I hate mold lines the light grey exposes them.

The ONLY thing I use that isn't Vallejo is the Mechanics Grey for base colors for tie fighters and whatnot.

I've checked a number of different q tip brands and I cannot find any that have the hollow plastic rods anymore. I'm located in Atlantic Canada.

In lieu of that I wrapped 6 squad stands in painters tape and I intend to just use them to do all the priming and painting. If the weather would cooperate so I can get the priming assembly line underway, that is...

J&J Canada makes it hard.... they committed to rolled paper rather than plastic sticks... the others are just not readily available.
