big changes too close to worlds?

By SkyCake, in Star Wars: Armada

With a new faq coming in the next few weeks all but confirmed, and those speculators who are guessing big changes are in the mix, might big changes this close to the biggest tournament in 'mada be a tad irresponsible/disruptive?

I guess I'm thinking that in a perfect world, your waves and faqs would drop in such a way that allowed people enough time to practice the new content and rules before major tourneys like regionals and worlds.

If we get faq like 2 weeks before worlds, there are probably going to be a healthy number who will not be able to test out new rules before worlds, thus turning worlds into something of a test bed rather than a competition.

Thoughts?

It's a game. Have fun.

Edit - More on topic - Two weeks should be okay especially if we like to talk about Armada being a balanced game. If it's the player and not the list, the better player should win even if the FAQ drops the day before.

Yea it should have dropped 2 or 3 weeks ago. 4 weeks out and no FAQ? That's how you piss people off.

Keep in mind, FFG has a precedence set for how much time testing can be done in a worst case before a major competition.

11 Days.

If you get more than 11 days, then FFG has conformed to their own Guidelines on the matter.

This happened prior to a recent X-Wing World Championship. It really angered people, especially because some "in-the-know" players (who were either playtesters or admitted that they were advised by playtesters to prepare based on these upcoming changes) noted the unfair advantage they had over the players who basically had the carpet pulled out from under them two weeks before the event. The forums and podcasts were all abuzz with people venting their frustration over this poorly timed decision and the disparity it created between in-the-know and not in-the-know players.

At this point, I firmly believe that there is no Pre-Worlds FAQ coming for Armada. I can't believe that FFG would be stupid enough to drop changes so close to Worlds again, given the huge #*$&-storm it caused in the X-Wing community when they did it. An FAQ almost immediately after Worlds, though, that I could see.

Just because there is an official 11 Day policy does not mean that 12 Day notice would be a fair or wise decision.

I don't think I agree there. Part of being a better player is understanding how your fleet works together and how it scores points. If the FAQ drastically alters that calculation you might not be able to win a game even if you are the better player. It could also leave players in a lurch that didn't bring other fleets of some part of their build is strictly outlawed by an FAQ change.

I said this before it became popular.

Does that apply to a FAQ? Or just new content?

This line of thinking suggests that you expect a Nerf, not a FAQ.

IF it is a Nerf, then I am in complete agreement. 2 weeks isn't really enough time to to expect the best possible field for worlds.

Now if it's a FAQ, even the biggest change like, XI7 trumps AP, while frustrating, isn't insurmountable with 2 weeks lead time.

I gotta believe FFG knows this. So unless the design team is after some petty revenge for the Flotilla/Relay hate, I wouldn't expect a Nerf to drop right before worlds.

Im not going to worlds, and dont care when they drop it. Maybe everyone should plan a list that doesnt involve a solid fuckery of flotillas, just in case?

Wait wait wait - does adding "ery" to the end of a bad word get it around the censors?

Shitery. Douchbagery. Dickery.

Edit: Initial results are positive.

FFGery. Huh. It does work.

This seems like the obvious choice. I mean, the proposed changes are out there. Nobody really knows what's actually going to come down, but there's enough buzz around certain things like the tabling rule, relay nerf, 1:1 rule, etc, that, if you're going to Worlds, it would be wise to practice with a fleet that accounts for these changes.

I do think it's too close to worlds for a major rules errata at this point, but that doesn't mean there's nothing you can do to prepare for it if it does come down. Might there be something unexpected and out of the blue? Sure. But there's a pretty good chance it'll at least have a similar effect to the (more realistic) proposals we've been kicking around here fora year.

Get in what you can before they nerf it. Hopefully they give you enough lead time so you can prepare.

But I need my solid fuckery of them!

Also I desperately hope the FAQ drops today so everyone who's complaining has a month to prep. Destiny dropped yesterday, so maybe today or tomorrow?

There will be no FAQ in the next three months.

There will be no new articles in the next three months.

There will be no wave 8 news in the next three months.

Technically new content... But Does it matter? That’s my point.

if we can be expected to deal with a whole new release in 11 days, we should be expected to do the same with an FAQ, errata, etc in the same timeframe .

that was my point with precedence there.

That would rune a lot of lists. Flotilla fuckery is the meta.

Fuckery begets fuckery?

I was under the foolish impression that telling everyone that might stop anyone mentioning it until then...and just being pleasantly surprised if I was wrong.

I think most players are very much aware of things in the game that are potentially deserving of a nerf (those two things mostly being relay & flotillas)

And to play devil's advocate here.... players who are good enough to get a slot at worlds should also be plenty good enough to have at least a preliminary backup plan in case any of the really obvious nerfs happen.

I.e. it wouldn't be any great surprise to anyone if relay or flotillas were affected negatively by the faq, and not having a plan for what you are going to do if they are affected is just wilfull ignorance.
