How to store your little plastic ships

By Darth Drago, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

We're all tired of spending money on expensive foam strays for our ships, right?

We just want a quick, easy, and efficient way to store our ships without spending $100 on a bag to store "little plastic ships."

Well here's a solution!

I use a tackle box.

I use Stanley Fatmax storage boxes. The shallow ones work well for everything except epic ships, and the Deep Pro Organizer works great for epic ships. If you're in Canada, you can grab shallow and deep Maximum brand trays from Canadian Tire. I've got both Stanley and Maximum shallow and deep trays, all of the front latches align and close perfectly across both brands, and so do the side clips that secure the stacked trays to each other.

Here's what the deep Stanley (top) and Maximum (bottom) look like. The only real difference apart from a slight variance in cost is that the Stanley lids will actually stay propped open at 90 degrees, and will not lay flat. The Maximum lids open all the way and lay down flat.

Stanley storage cases are awesome, as pictured above.

i use a husky toolbox and 2 of the thin stanley organizers.

fyi both sizes of card in sleeves(pilot and upgrade) have a corresponding section in those organizers, which makes life sooo much easier

I use a tauntaun. Just make sure you've trained them well before hand, or they get unruly. As a plus size, they keep your ships warm.

:P

What kind of saddlebags do you use, happabore or nerf leather?

Here's most of the rest of my storage:

I have the majority of my upgrade cards and all my Imperial dials in a 3" zippered binder, and some random ships strewn about in various phases of repainting or modding. The trays with blue dividers are from Princess Auto .

Saddle bags? No saddle bags. I store them inside the tauntaun. That's why they can get unruly.

@CyCo What's the temperature of the ships once you pull them out? I hope it doesn't melt them.

The website was supposed to be helpful for anyone who does not want to spend a lot on tackle boxes. There are other things on the site besides carrying ideas, so I would check it out. ;)

Oh, they come out just fine. Just remember to rinse them clean and maybe use some of that 'nil odour' type of stuff.

:P

Huh. Mine always come out luke-warm and a little melted.

You're obviously running your tauntaun a little to hot. ;)

I use Sir Willibald™ boxes. Depending on the model (like the U-wing and Striker) you can fit two ships in one box, and usually you can fit two dials & 4 ship tokens in one box.

I don't like to cut curves, so I make mine straight lines and it really helps to keep the boxes closed if you cut a slit on the lid (see picture).

I use the Sir Willibald ship boxes too- find them very good for avoiding damage to "pointy-out" bits.

I do find the boxes to be a bit tight on some ships- especially if you laserwrite them on to 300gm card....because the laserwriter heating shrinks the card slightly. So I always oversize the print to about 104% to 107%...depending on the box.
