A New Case for Second Edition

By ForceSensitive, in X-Wing

They could do a 2.0 in a few different ways. My personal favorite would be:

Option 1) Create an official squad builder app, and put all stats and costs in that. Ignore all printed values on cards, and refer exclusively to the squad builder app for stats and pricing. Release a cardboard pack that would have updated dials and cardboard inserts for turrets (to make them into mobile arcs).
Pros: Allows for constant changing of chassis upgrades and costs. Minimizes the investment required to update components from V1 to V2, which is good for FFG and the customer. Minimal cost to upgrade from V1 to V2.
Cons: Destroys the "you must buy this exp pack for the upgrade card," system they've established. It also requires a digital input to play the game properly, basically establishing a codex. Could lead to a codex system that other games use that's obnoxious AF imo.

Option 2) Release a card/cardboard only package. This would be a one time rebalancing of all of the cards and rules and whatnot.
Pros: Only moderate cost to update from V1 to V2. Maintains same system moving forward (must have cards/ships/upgrades to make each list).
Cons: Is basically a point-in-time rebalancing that costs money. As new ships continue to come out, V2 rebalanced ships will likely fall behind the power curve as well. Moderate cost to upgrade, and takes up shelving space for what's basically a one-time-purchase item. Would future reprints have V1 stuff or would they require the V2 update still?

Option 3) Rerelease the game as V2.0, invalidating all of the current collection.
Pros: Major pro here is that it wipes the slate of some of the bull*(&S ships that other versions really couldn't do, and allows for continued future releases without plunging further into obscure EU.
Cons: Lots of cons here. $$$$. Pissing off a bunch of customers. Creating a schism in the OP between folks who stay with V1 and folks who move forward with V2. $$$$$$$$. Unless approached from a 5 year plan aspect, will likely lead to the same issue as we're currently in (new releases are just better than old ones).

Though above and beyond a V2.0, I kind of want a revamping of OP competitive play. Casual play has always been fun and continues to be fun. Scenario play would be welcomed, but 3rd party support seems to have it taken care of decently. Most of the complaints come from the 100/6 competitive play where certain combos are OP compared to others, and you keep seeing the same lists/components winning. My suggestion would be to make a rotating list of changes for each season (which I would define as the 4 quarters for the 4 OP kits, Store Championships, Regionals, Nationals*, System Opens, and Worlds, for 9 different lists each year).

What exactly the list might be could be up to interpretation. It could be everything from a ban list of certain ships/pilots/upgrades, to a MOV modifier for certain ships (either positive or negative), to an actual cost alteration (Miranda costs +3pts, Luke costs -2pts), to stats modifiers (TIE fighters have 4 hull but +1 cost)... Or even an objective type list (Each ship you kill with a 2attack primary counts as +10 MOV)... Or even a title type change (After executing a 3 turn, an unstressed A Wing may receive a stress token to rotate 180 degrees)... Or heck, they could even add temporary pilots to various craft (Tycho in a T65 at 28 points) or something.

They could really keep the meta from getting stale by doing stuff like this without actually releasing a V2.0. And if there are things they wish actually existed on earlier ships could just be a constant rule change (aka, if they wanted the A wing to always be able to flip around since they're supposed to be super maneuverable).

*They could handle Nationals in several different ways since various ones happen at various times. It could either just play by the rules of the current list, Nationals could be its own rule for all of them, or each one could be unique.

LET THE DOUBTERS BE SHOWN THE LIGHT!

I'm not vindictive about this... What are you talking about?

They won't reboot X-Wing until there are any signs that anything is wrong with this version. They're selling bucketloads of it, tournaments are bigger than ever, new Star Wars film and shows are coming thick and fast to ensure future wave content, the metagame is in great shape...

Second edition is 4 or 5 years away, I'd reckon.

You weren't right if you had said weeks. #Vindicated. Let us enjoy this day together.
