note that Legion's squad size is about 5(4-6) which if followed would half the total number of minis needed.

Yes, but it's not surprising since 12,800 is just the number of NCOs and men and doesn't include Officers, HQ staff, Support Troops, etc, etc, (at each level of the formation), which presumably they just forgot to bring with them and left at home!

@Muelmuel I've read it was 4 squads to a platoon. And that each squad was broken down into two fire teams, each of which would therefore roughly equate to a Legion squad.

Though, it is possible, that Moff Jerjerod pulled many of the troops up to perform other duties in order to get the Death Star operational in time for Paplatines arrival.

How big was is this Forest Moon of Endor?

I mean you put 15-20,000 men in ... lets say Germany.... and see how spread out they get trying to patrol every likely Chinook landing spot & a single base in the middle of Nuremberg Forrest....

A legion is not a lot of men in the big wide world... just compare it the the crew of an SSD!

That's a good point. We have to give some leeway to the movie because we don't know what kinds of infrastructure the Empire had on the moon. If they had a dozen structures to defend, all spread out for some unfathomable reason, a legion might get thin quickly. That said... I could have easily stopped the Rebels if I was the Imperial commander and only had to defend what we saw in the movie.

Given that, I have to assume there was a large facility with many potential vulnerabilities the rebels could have exploited.

So, the death star was in orbit around a moon, not a planet, and given the size of the death star, it would probably not have been possible to have the Death Star maintain a geosynchronous orbit without having to pass between the moon and the planet, and deal with fluctuating gravity conditions as it did. Most likely the Death Star would have maintained a stable orbit around the moon and the planet by holding in the 'lee' of the moons orbit, effectively being dragged along behind the moon as it moved around the planet, which would also mean the moon would be rotating relative to the Death Star as it did.

That would mean that in order to maintain the shield at all times, several facilities would need to be set up in order to ensure full coverage throughout the cycle. Since the Imperials would not know the exact time of the attack, they would have had to garrison several separate locations and mobilize troops/walkers/etc between them, while the rebels knew the exact hour they intended to perform the assault, and would be able to determine exactly which facility to destroy in order to give themselves the largest possible window of opportunity before the next shield generator rotated into range.

On top of that, the rebels assaulted the back door of the facility, which again required Imperials to relocate troops from patrolling around the main facility to the back door before they could be effective.

They keep messing with those numbers...I just don’t buy 12,000 in a legion. That’s way too high. That’s just Disney ***ing around.

Isn't a Legion 3000 ish roughly? I was under the impression an ISD could carry 3 legions. I don't know anymore.

Interesting. And here I thought that Legion could be used to mean the huge number of players and their armies.. not necessarily the number of models per army per game.

Not really. When you are talking about a Galaxy spanning Empire, you'd have to have your military organized in very large units. Especially when you are considering a unit might be pulled up and sent to an entirely new planet. The canon numbers for star wars armies are actually laughably tiny.

The Forest Moon of Endor has a diameter of 4900km, or a surface area of 75,429,600km. Which would give a Legion of Stormtroopers about 6,285km PER STORMTROOPER! Even if we cut that down to just the equatorial zone, you're still talking about a huge area the legion would have to keep locked down.
