New Aliens in Solo

By Imperial Advisor Arem Heshvaun, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Why do we need all these new aliens in every new film? Still waiting to see a Rodian, Twi'Lek, Iridonian, Ithorian and especially a Trandoshan in one of the new films.

Introducing a couple of new designs here and there is fine, but if it's see them once, never again it's a bit of a waste. You don't build a world with one offs, you build a world by adding detail and depth.

Gotta have more toys so they can sit on the shelves for the next few years.

True of course, but the new toys don't need to be of new species do they?

I mean come on, hasn't anyone else wondered what a modern Bossk would look like, with modern practical effects?

This is not a knock on the character design of course - some of the aliens in the trailer look good, and the new aliens in Rogue One looked absolutely amazing, but can't we have a little more love for the menagerie of monsters from the original films? Gammoreans, Quarren, Devaronians, Gand...

I'd rather have aliens than even more Rose Tico...

Anyone else getting a Final Fantasy vibe from this one?

Are there any Defels lurking in the corners?

IDK, but I suddenly want a predator to hunt it down.

Yea, it is one of my complaints for the new films too. Look, I know they want to sell the idea that there are hundreds if not thousands of races but I'd rather have more developed fewer races than tons of forgettable ones. Besides, it is sort of really odd that we used to see certain aliens a ton of times and now nope, they are nowhere. At least, we do see some Twi'lek in this film and in Rogue One. One was in Saw's group, I think they even made it Bib Fortuna's brother or cousin or something, and there were I think two Twi'lek in Solo at least based off the trailer where the one lady was dancing.

One of the things I was really looking forward to seeing in the new Star Wars filsm is some of the original aliens updated with modern pratical and CGI-enhanced effects.

Can you imagine a modern fight scene between Chewbacca and Bossk, for example? Or one of the new characters having an Ithorian or Gran side-kick? When you've alrerady got such a rich universe of races and characters to draw from, not everything needs to be new.

Someone remind me, apart from boba fett, how often do the other bounty hunters appear on screen in the OT? Or any of the aliens for that matter?

Not often. Which is kind of the point - they were introduced, then little was actually done with them. So let's actually take this opportunity to do something with them, instead of just introducing vague new races and throwaway characters that nothing is done with and are never seen again. More depth & substance please, that's how you buiild rich universes.

Well, my point was that the Star Wars universe is one of the deepest and richest going, and one of the ways it was built was by showing cool new aliens in every scene, rather than showing the same ones over and over making the universe feel small. Each of those vague new races and throwaway characters becomes a story hook, they get a name and a backstory, and the universe becomes richer through the diversity. A bit of fan service is cool, like seeing Dr Evazan and Ponda Baba in Jedha, but introducing something really cool and then acting like it's no big thing (like two-tubes in Rogue One, for example) really helps to build depth. More so, IMO, than over-using the same characters or alien races all the time.

And that's how we ended up with the EU bloat. Rich I will agree with but Star War's is anything but deep. Everything always points back to a movie or something which ends up making everything seem small.
