What beasts can be expected for each faction.

By jgibbs2, in Star Wars: Legion

Let's start a bit of speculation! I was thinking of what factions can get what beasts, and wanted to get everyone's ideas. So far it looks like:

Imperials -

Dewback, Bantha

Rebels -

Ronto, Tauntaun

Neutral -

Wampa, Rancor

Do we know any animals that either faction used (cannon) during the galactic civil war?

at the very least i'd be surprised to not see Tauntaun Riders as a recon/scout unit (i.e. they have very weak offensive, but are very fast w/o the Comp move and have a targeting ability where friendlies shooting at a unit in R1-2 of them gain an automatic Aim token)

Tauntaun/Dewback should be like a flip with AT-RT and Speeder Bikes.

Tauntauns should come as a pair, have moderate offense (maybe a strong melee headbutt and then their usual rifles for range) and have a good speed, and maybe be Unhindered/Expert Climber. But I'm thinking they will be like "Creature" or "Mounted Trooper" so are probably still vulnerable to suppression. So they can cover a lot of ground but aren't quite as efficient as bikes. As troopers and without compulsory move, they'd be better suited to flank and capture objectives though.

Dewback trooper should be only like 1-2 speed, and while maybe not full blown Armor but definitely some form of damage mitigation, high HP, also probably Unhindered but not a climber. Should also be a melee and ranged attack, good for a steady unit for damage potential. Though apparently a lot of old and new games give either/or Tauntaun Riders and Dewback troopers flamethrowers, I hope FFG is a little more creative than that, or we're gonna be saturated in Spray weapons before long.

Also looking at the Commander roster, Bantha Riders are a Rebel thing.

I want by dewback dewback dewback ribs......

I forgot about these guys! I would love to see them, though I think we'll see some more iconic beasts before we see anything like this.

Those camels are trippy.

I desperately need Dewbacks, Tauntauns, and Banthas. IA only got me two out of three.

I think dewbacks are the first release we'll see. If FFG decides to release something for the rebels around the same time, tauntauns are probably the most iconic animal we'll see for rebels.

Also hope we can get a ronto in the next year or two!

I know they are not Canon, but maybe Imps on those giants Mustafa lava fleas? Mustafa being where Vader has his castle and all.

Porgs? Yes, I think so.

I want Blurrg Calvary for the Rebels! Cham Syndulla and the Free Ryloth movement would be a nice addition.

Ewoks

This is exactly what I was thinking too for the Tauntaun riders. I think they’d be fine to be classed as troopers for rules mechanics. Squads of 2 with Expert Climber and Relentless, Speed 3, offensive and defensive surge, white defense dice, an A-300 Blaster rifle (2 white dice, range 1-3) for range and Tauntaun claws (maybe like 1 Red, 1 black and 1 white dice?) for Melee. Maybe given them 3 health and - courage. If you’re running full speed on a tauntaun you aren’t going to go to ground suppressed.

I think this is unlikely. However, I think that your logic is sound and that I would very much like to see them myself for that same reason!

Honestly, I'm hoping, much like the objectives set, we get some neutral beasts that attack anyone that comes close - not controlled by any player. To me, THAT would be fun. You could have a random Nexu guarding an objective as a battlefield condition.

Perhaps FFG will do a neutral creatures pack much in the same way they did with the terrain pack, where the creatures will have deployment cards that dictate where they move and what they're attracted to; ie a wampaa will not attack a vehicle.

Perhaps Inquisitor Valin Draco with his Hssiss (Darkside Dragon)...

Some units might have something like a monkey lizard that can mess with your upgrade cards...

I see two issues with beasts in Legion:

(1) Beasts are localized to one particular climate on one particular planet

--> To see Taun-Tauns alongside Dewbacks on an Endor map would likely look and feel wrong.

(2) Beasts are, because of their local adaptations, an efficient way to recon/patrol (but not too engage combat)

The Rebels used Taun-Tauns as means to patrol the icy misery of Hoth, but only because the speeders and other craft weren't fully adapted to the cold. But note that when it came time to fight, the Rebels weren't on the Taun-Tauns during the battle of Hoth. A local beat-cop Stormtrooper might ride a sluggish Dewback around Mos Eisely, but when it comes down to a shootout what is that dewback (or Bantha) bringing to the table? Elephant cavalry was intimidating in the Punic Wars, but no one has used them in combat since vehicles and rifles have been a thing.

Would miniatures of beasts-of-burden look cool? Yes. Would they make sense in a combat-focused game set across many landscapes where AT-RTs and Speeder Bikes and Airspeeders and the like are available options? Not really.
