GoT House Intro decks and what it means for L5R

By Ishi Tonu, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Not sure if anyone has checked the main FFG page for anything non-L5R related lately but here is the link for their Game of Thrones House Intro Decks:

While we don't have anything like this for L5R..................yet, I think this is a good indication of something we may see at some point in the future for L5R. It's not difficult to imagine FFG doing L5R Clan Intro Decks at some point.

I didn't get too far into it as I worry this might tempt me to use my funds on these intro decks to have on hand for some casual play, and the Phoenix clan pack is right around the corner. If we do get something like this for L5R, I imagine it will be much further down the road, but, I like the idea of it coming to L5R at some point.

I agree wholeheartedly that preconstructed intro decks would be fantastic, but the card pool has to be large enough to allow them, so I think we're at least a year or so away from them with L5R. A very cool product and an encouraging sign, though.

I agree, in a year or two, once we're in to maybe the 4th dynasty cycle, that a clan intro deck would be interesting, but since we're doing the clan packs instead of deluxe boxes (at least at this moment) I don't know how well this idea would work out in terms of the cardpool.

What worries me is, who will be in charge of designing the decks? Given FFG story of greatly misevaluating their own cards, I bet they’ll put 3x of Wandering Ronin in each of those Intro decks, just to try and make him happen.

More likely they will offer decks that were relevant in a passed meta. :P

Intro decks Are not mean to be good decks, They just present the game and faction to new players while trying to be somewhat balanced with other intro decks. But They Are a good starting points to player who is just jumping in to the game. A couple of friends can buy a couple of intro decks and play them against each others and then deside if They wan to just deck building to make those intro decks better or to make completely new decks.

so having three ronings in the deck is just fine, if all other intro decks Also have three ronings. They Are equally bad in all of those intro decks, aka balanced.

And Yes, only usefull much later in the life cycle of the game. More cards to build somewhat balanced deck to each faction. Maybe even so that there Are no splash cards in them.

The Thrones decks at least look like they will likely be reasonable. Sounds like they will have solid themes, and are focused around power characters. Probably not amazing - that's not the point of intro decks - but not flat out terrible either. So it's a little silly to think that an L5R version would be different.

More important is the introduction of sideboard in the last tournament rules o FAQ or something like that.

Not quite - you're referring to a special format that is going to be used for a one-off worldwide event.

People have theorized that if the fornat proves popular, it may become a regular option, but that remains to be seen.

It's also very much worth noting that it took several cycles for Thrones to reach the point where this was even considered.
