Anyone else buying into the new "BattleTech" and MechWarrior 5?

Most of the 1 star reviews mention that ACs are currently broken.

I was going to pick it up but figured I'd wait till after worlds and see how the pocketbook looks. Now after reading 1 star after 1 star review I might wait till its patched and see if any of the ratings improve.

I've seen nothing of this on the forums. ACs are supposed to be powerful. You can easily counter them by moving a lot or blocking LOS.

The game play is great, but the interface needs help. A lot of people are having issues running the game, but I turned on v-sync and it fixed it. The game is a bit unoptimized, and some things don't make sense, like the difficulty. You can run into huge spikes where you can lose your lance, but I'm not sure if it's intended. The game is supposed to be a translation of the table top and it sticks to the lore. Perhaps the game is encouraging you to withdraw and take the loss. Not sure.

It's definitely fun for $40.

I would trade energy hard points for my AC ones in a heart beat, right now I have mostly mediums (one dragon only heavy) and my best mech is my Vindicator with its PPC. Lightest mech that I am fielding but gets the most kills energy weapons are so much better than AC's in this game (table top I am the flip of this, love my dakka, same with jump jets table top love them this game stripped them all out).

I hate the hardpoint system. If I have a mech and want to fill it with nothing but energy weapons within the mass and critical space limits I should be free to do so. And repairs and retrofits take far too much time IMO. Also it seems like the difficulty spikes hard. In difficulty two missions I'm usually facing multiple mech lances often with heavier mechs then I have or at least more mediums then I have. And I'm at least two pieces away from my first heavy unless I'm handed one like I was my first Centurion.

The game is a blast. Some polishing needed but it’s great fun

The Hardpoint issue solves what is considered a perpetual problem in the Board Game. That is, the fact that in most eras, the most efficient weapon you can use is nothing but Bunches of Medium Lasers.

Of course, back in the day - for the tabletop - when the hardpoint system was first kicked around, it was additionally set up that you could - long term in campaigns - pass Engineering rolls to change a hardpoint from one type to another... But of course, screwing it up had a chance of damaging the hardpoint, damaging the component, or even throwing the whole BattleMech out of whack one way or another.

Its just been... half *** administered all of these years.

Yea I have a Hunchback variant that swapped the AC/20 for 6 medium lasers... It's ridiculous how much more effective it is.

I mean, canonically, there are some BattleMech variants that fly in the face of established norms .. The HBK-5P is one of them, as you say, replacing an AC20 with a medium laser bank.

The CPLT-K2 is another, switching those iconic missile launchers for PPCs.

but fluff wise these were always separate variants, and there was “something” not discussed behind the scenes (potentially reactor output) that stopped it being common.

And it’s not the only time Reactir output is a factor - it’s even stated as being an issue in OmniMechs when they twin mount Gauss Rifles and then try to alpha shot them ( the system tries to prioritize the rifles and can lag other energy shots and even make the mech trip by skipping a step beat).

But these are background issues not... directly addressed in the game system.

except abstractly by the hard point system.

...

And people think I’m an Armada freak ?

So are they releasing a new version of the board game? If so, that would be great. Or are they just doing more PC games?

That looks fun. I love the original
