Wild Speculations

By Xiervak, in Star Wars: Legion

On another thread, I saw someone speculating that someday we will see an Emperor Palpatine as a commander. It got me thinking as to who would be a good match for a Rebel release. I would like to see Yoda. What do you think?

IF we ever see Palpatine, it’s my hope that he has close to 0 combat strength in a strategic sense. I’d hope he would be more of a commander who hangs back and oversees the entire battlefield, rather than charging in and electrocuting atrts. Very squishy, but very powerful if that were the case.

to counter, a rebel character with similar qualities. Not combat orientated at all, but incredibly good when it comes to battlefield control. Mon Monthma comes to mind but as far as I am aware she is a politician, not a commander. Then again, so is Palpatine.

I personally think that Vader and Luke should be the strongest individuals in the game. Palpatine was a politician and Yoda had gone into exile.

Chewbaccca, Lando, Old Ben, Madine, Rieken all seem like viable options.

If we see Prequel era factions, Yoda would fit in that case.

I mean, Palpatine is no pushover in a fight. No matter how much some people may dislike it, Episode III is canon, and in that Palpatine murders 3 Jedi masters in seconds, and holds his own against both Mace Windu (only losing because it was part of his plan) and Yoda; two of the most powerful Jedi warriors at the time. And outside of lightsaber skill, he has force lightning and probably many other powers we never saw on-screen. I definitely agree that in a straight-up melee fight he shouldn't be as powerful as someone like Vader, but I don't think he should be a pushover either.

True, if and when we see Prequel era factions Yoda would fit right in with the Republic. For the GCW he doesn't for the Rebellion.

Sheev's got some moves and he's a playable "hero" type character in a lot of video games in this genre. I don't think in his old age he should necessarily be dropping psycho crushers, but he's a powerful enemy. And remember Master of the Force is a numbered keyword. Plus Battle Mediation is already in the game, why not be able to stick it on the guy who was supposed to have used it, unless they drop KOTOR stuff in?

Palpatine should be in a release with his Royal Guards as special forces with Guardian to keep him alive and form a big melee wall around him. Interestingly I think his rebel comparison in terms of points would probably be Luke, his raw tankiness and combat potential shouldn't equal Vader who is his beat stick (and also we know Vader can deadlift palp) but he should still bring a lot of pain with upgrades.

I hope not. Ol' Palp is too important to get involved in platoon-level skirmishes.

Can I go to tournaments in my bathrobe?

Yoda is not a commander for the rebellion and palpatine doesn't see to matters himself, he has vader for that.

Only if you take pictures.

Yeah, I get you. I wasn’t trying to make it sound like he couldn’t hold his own in a fight.

But the problem with Palpatine and characters in general with a seemingly unmeasurable amount of power, is how do you make them both mechanically interesting as well as flavourful in a game. So based on his on screen kill stats he should be able to wipe pretty much every character off the board pretty easily, especially if he could take out 3 masters + windu with ease.

that would be a boring *** game.

so my suggestion was to make him a glass canon when it comes to combat. Deadly, but Make him very squishy.

If Palp is coming to Legion he better come to Armada first :P He is more likely to appear in a fleet than he is in a small skirmish

There are several times in Legends where there are various groups trying to assassinate him in different ways. With Endor, Palpatine shows that he's not above using himself as bait for his enemies, so having him pop up would be interesting there.

I say no Palp, keep Vader and Luke the powerful commanders, I really don't want more expensive commanders

Palpatine would probably work best if largely confined to the grand armies.

I reckon it would be amazing to see Grand Army as an actual supported mode with new units. Here we could include AtAts or bigger hitters, but also Grand Army Commanders.

Commanders that are too expensive to field in a 800 pointgame but provide army wide buffs/tactical advantages to the 1600 point battles. If we had some designed specifically for Grand Army games I would be in on that.

Himself as bait with a moon sized station + a fleet of star destroyers ?

Papa Palpatine would work especially well if they release Cham Syndulla and some ryloth freedom fighters, a la The Sith Lords.

I really hope Chewbaca is a special forces unit and not a commander. He should have a bodyguard keyword that lets him draw fire away from a friendly commander, red defense dice and defensive surge. Oh, and his bowcaster should roll 3 red dice at range 1-3 with surge to crit.

I'm down for Lando, Rieekan and Madine as the other original trilogy commanders.

What I'm really excited about for Legion is the possibility for clone wars era units. This game, more than any of the other Star Wars games FFG makes, would really shine there. No shortage of powerful battlefield commanders on both sides, lots of cool ground vehicles - yeah, battle droids are lame but I'd love to zip around on one of their STAPs - and some seriously cool options for troopers. I mean, just for the capability to bring in Mandalorians in full force I'd be on board.

Commander-wise, you've got Yoda, Obi-Wan, Commander Cody, Mace friggin' Windu for the good guys and General Grievous, Count Dooku, Darth Maul... so many good options. I really hope they do this, since ground combat in the OT is pretty limited for canon options.

Oh palp will definitely be in this game eventually. FFG loves the old fart, and he'll probably be like 400pts to follow suit with othe rgames where hes always meant to be taken alone or with very minor support.

And i will hate that so much as i do the other iterations of him because that is such a STUPID WAY TO BALANCE SOMETHING

You also have things like in TIE Fighter where he played bait to try getting Admiral Zaarin...in the ******* gold plated shuttle craft
