Potential alternative for maps from older games

By deogg, in Star Wars: Legion

As I was assembling my Core Set today, it got me thinking about other games out there and using maps or tiles as maps/terrain for Legion. I came up with some potential ideas:

-Heroscape: Great for elevation and cover. With enough of the tiles from that, the possibilities are beyond endless.
-AT-43: The game had all sorts of map tiles
-Imperial Assault/Doom/Star Wars minis/etc: Tiles, boards........maybe?

Now, I know, not usable in Organized Play, but in friendly pickup games, why not?

Heroscape is probably not the best option for building your board, the individual tiles are rather tiny and would be a massive mess to have a full sized board.

The WotC Star Wars and D&D maps might work, but they're extremely cluttered up due to the way those games worked their battles with regard to the terrain movement rules. I've tried using them with other minis games and it's a massive hassle to mess with there even with normal bases sizes due to the doors being mapped to the grid for them which can be a massive issue, plus remembering what all of the decor is in regard to terrain rules.

One of the best options would be to look for the maps boxed set for Mongoose's defunct Starship Troopers games and building from there if you want to have a basic starting point...one of them is a 4"x6" fold out grass mat that is pretty good despite being on poster paper.

-Well, if you just happen to have a buttload of Heroscape (4 Master Set 1's, 2 Master Set 2's, the fortress, lava, tundra, among others......yeah, I have a problem! LOL) *I have a Master Set 3 which I haven't opened, and a couple of Marvel Master Sets too*, the potential is there to make something massive enough for a full sized board. In hindsight, the problem I see is actually the texture of the tiles and it might make placement of the figs clunky if they happen to rest on the juuuuuust right spot.

-IIRC there were some outdoor maps for WotC Star Wars (didn't the AT-AT and Battle of Hoth sets come with outdoor maps? I'll have to dig mine out) that might work

-AT-43 had both indoor and outdoor map tiles (that aren't gridded like WotC SW) that may work as well. AT-43 also has stuff like the containers and bunkers and obstacles that might help.

-I'll have to check out Starship Troopers. I have some stuff from it, but not that map boxed set

Like I said, definitely NOT for OP in any way, but for those people (like myself) that aren't that artistically talented enough to make a custom board/buildings/etc, thinking of some possible alternatives for "grings and giggles" casual games!

I love the idea of using the tiles from Imperial Assault. Using and combining tiles from all the sets you could make quite a table. The only concern I would have is agreed upon line of sight. Of course you could build interior and exterior spaces on the same table and you could constantly keep it fresh by rearranging tiles.

I am going against the grain of making Tattooine or Endor tables and building a modular Death Star/Star Destroyer interior table. I am excited for the release of the Fleet Troopers as this will look a lot more accurate in my opinion for an interior table. My next table WAS going to be the Jundland Wastes but I am leaning more towards Bespin combining interior and exterior platforms and walkways. Gotta have a Carbon Freezing Chamber!

Love the Heroscape talk!

Don't need the hexes, just use the trees, Marvel ruins, rocks, and glaciers. I don't think the Jungle trees would be too useful since they are top heavy.

The runewars playmat is pretty spiffy.

Perhapa Games Workshop's Space Hulk floortiles for space station, soaceships and ground-base interiors?

I used the 1st edition version years ago, to recreate the opening boarding-action scene from Star Wars.

Heroscape is great for "layer cake" style hills if you don't already have some... especially if you've got multiple master sets.

not much to add, just excited for Heroscape talk, as it was the first step on the journey that led to here (Heroscape to DND to X-wing to Legion - my how time flies!)

But for reals, the heroscape trees are really decent quality for this game and you don't have to worry about them leaving bits everywhere. the rest does get a bit plastic looking but could work short term

I have a whole large milk crate of Heroscape sitting in the garage, use to use them to make 3d WotC terrain for home games, that really is a good idea! I have a full 6x3 table now of forest, but there is some broken buildings, some weird large set pieces and other stuff i could paint a re-purpose from the master sets.

My friend and I were discussing the fact we have probably have 1k WotC minis between the 2 of us if not more, there really is nothing stopping us from using all those prepainted minis for legion. I have 4 at-st, and more stormtroopers than i could shake a fist at. It would be pretty easy to field a whole other table or 2 with just those for both sides. (especially since I bought 2 cores and 2 extra dice packs.) They are a little bit smaller which would affect LOS but if both sides used them...

If you are going to play with IA tiles, just play IA with legion miniatures. It is the better game (not hobby).

Huh this is a good idea.. There's a ton of tiles too, probably get a good sized board out of it
