Hi guys, just got the core (im super slow to the party) and have begun painting my crew.
I'm curious to what peoples opinions are to painting/texturing the bases?
I do get that the mini's will be both outdoors and indoors, but my gut-feeling is that a rather neutral, dark, sand-based 'base' will bring some life to the figures. I don't want to add any grasses to them, as that would break immersion (except maybe the AT-ST, as that is only outdoors, or.. what?).
Cheers!
Bases on the miniatures
It's all up to you. All figures will go anywhere, even the ATST is possible. Personally I'd like to try clear bases.
Clear bases look cool on the map and work well with the changing terrain.
Though, as a skirmish player and old-skooler, I think the bases are also helping tying your gang together. For my Scum units I've gone some cracked/dusty sandcolored bases. For Rebels I've gone more jungle theme with cracked mud - this also allowed me to go more or less pure cracked mud color on the units I often import into my Scum gangs to make them still fit well. My imperials I still paint blue/grey tiles on (as I did all factions in different colors earlier - but got tired of how long it took).
Might take some pictures soonish
Edit: You can see the cracked/dusty scum base on my Shyla conversion.
Edited by aermet69I have based with glue+sand, and sometimes something special like small rocks or moss, then colored to differentiate groups: red for elites / uniques, grey and light brown / sand for regulars, white for snow, green for some mercenaries, pastels for some Bespin groups.
I don't paint the rims of the bases.
I do really like the look of the texture paints, but I must admit to be on a budget, so I think colored sand will be the way to go. Coloring sand to match groups is rather appealing.
But you guys don't think it breaks immersion that your troopers are bringing snow/sand inside a building?
You'd think that, but honestly, you never notice in the moment. I prefer making cool looking bases just because they end up looking nicer and more substatial overall.

I understand the budget thing, but I've bought 1 bottle of Agrellan Earth texture, and so far I've only used like half or less of the bottle for nearly all my scum figures and a good deal of rebel figures as well. The sandtexture can be done with sand just as well, if not better.
I put a textured sand paint down. Painted Grey. Then lightly dry brushed brown, green, tan and white.
So that they look OK in every environment, but never great.
