Your goal at a big X-Wing event is ... ?

By Jeff Wilder, in X-Wing

Have fun playing X-Wing

The only major events I have been to have been Worlds the past couple of years, and they've been a blast each time.

Edited by Aaron Foss

To play six or more games of X-Wing.

I'm just doing this out of curiosity, so if it's not too much trouble, just read this and stick to the parameters of the post. Unfortunately, I don't know how to create a poll, or if it's even possible on this board.

  • The question is, "When you attend a large X-Wing tournament (arbitrarily defined as one with at least six games of Swiss before the cut), what is usually your primary goal in attending?"
  • Please respond with simply the text of your primary goal. I know that we all have mixed goals. So, for instance, the goal "win" does not preclude "have fun playing." If you pick "win," it simply means that your primary goal is to win the tournament, whereas if you pick "have fun playing," your primary goal is to enjoy yourself -- win or lose -- playing.
  • Feel free to start a secondary topic to discuss the poll's questions and answers, but please do start a secondary topic to discuss this. I'm hoping to get a snapshot of what people will select before they read any discussion or arguments for or against the listed goals, and that's hard to do when the arguments are sprinkled among the responses.

So, the options are:

  • Win
  • Make the cut / get dice
  • Play six or more games of X-Wing
  • Have fun playing X-Wing
  • Have fun socializing at the event

The goal is always to win "if winning isn't important why keep score"

Make the cut/get dice.. winning swag is always cool however lately the Swag seems kind of lame and the dice have been ugly..just saying.... Hay FFG how about an alt painted ship as swag!! then sell same ship retail a year or two later...(You would make a killing)

Playing 6 or more games at a pop gets to be a choir..

having fun is the main reason i play but as i mentioned marathon gaming sessions start to become UN-fun, however that usually means you are also winning..

Socializing is "OK" but not really important as most of the folks that come out for the BIG tournaments you ONLY see AT the big Tournaments.

If I were to go to a big tournament again: for my son to have an enjoyable time.

Which, for him, means getting games in with some wins, preferably over half.

My primary goal for major tournaments is to test myself against better players. This usually requires winning, because you have to get to those players, and I find playing challenging games of X-wing fun, so it's a complicated answer.

Have fun paying X-Wing.

edit: Okay, I guess I see what y'all are "liking" about this. Stupid early morning half asleep bad typing, ha ha.

Win more than I've won at that level of event before. Get swag. Some side goal depending on my list to satisfy me if I don't win.

I've got a paradox of goals that aren't necessarily compatible with one another.

I *want* to make a cut at major event, but I don't enjoy playing meta "power lists". I missed the cut at Indy by about 40 MOV doing "my own thing". Took the same list to another regional hoping to improve on that and went 0-3 before dropping and was pretty frustrated.

Listening to Iain Hamp on the latest Mynock podcast was exactly what I needed and how I need to approach every tournament I go to. I want to take a list that that I enjoy flying, and have an enjoyable game with my opponent. If I'm having fun then that is what is important and maybe that translates to a successful placing in the event. If it doesn't, then it doesn't.

make the cut, win dice. haven't done it yet. Well, I made the cut.

Use small base arcs only to consistently beat Miranda, Nym, RAC, Ghosts, Assaj, Lowhrick, Dash, Regen, and whatever is Biggs 2.0.

Play six or more games of X-Wing

Not run away from my opponents.

Have fun playing X-Wing.

True Confession: I have never attended event, and probably won't, but if I did, this would be my goal.

It was a big deal for me to go to my first X-Wing event, because I had never done anything like that before and I knew nobody there.

It was a blast and everyone was super cool. It was at a Regional and I didn't think I'd win a single game, but I won my first game and one other game (2-4) and had a fantastic time. You really should give it a try, it's a whole other type of X-Wing and not toxic as what you may hear.

Make cut / get prize swag (not always dice at every event).

Have fun playing X-Wing!...

Playing 6 or more games!...

So I can get them purty dice!

Objective 1: have fun (because otherwise, it is pointless)

Objective 2: find a list / strategy that will make other people groan yet not be the top latest thread on list juggler, so long as it does not contradict objective 1. (Hint: if looking at the list makes 50% of my opponents want to throw up, I'm on the right track)

Objective 3: get some loot up to and including dice, so long as it does not contradict objectives 1 and 2.

(A bit Asimov based, but it works)

They are not mutaully exclusive, but in order of priority they are:

  1. Have fun playing X-Wing
  2. Have fun socializing at the event (grief the WAAC jobs)
  3. Make the cut / get dice
  4. Play six or more games of X-Wing
  5. Win

Have fun!

My second reason would be seeing the list i am flying do well. Making a cut with jank or proving my version of a list is better than others.

If I'm being honest, my primary goal at large tournaments is to ruin the chances of as many meta list players making the cut as possible, while making the cut myself. Typically I win against meta lists 2/3 of the time, so I'm close, but it's enough to stop me from making the cut, as my MoV is always a tad low.

My secondary goal is to have some amazing games of X-wing, and my tertiary goal is to win some cool swag.

Probably have fun socializing, I've been flying the Ghost since it came out and have never sunk to Biggs levels for competive play but just had fun zipping around and yelling "get some" as I make laser noises, and friends haha.

After 4 Regionals going 4-2 and missing the cut... I'd say MAKE THE CUT

Has anyone quoted Conan yet? How come no one's quoted Conan yet?

OK, in absence of Conan I'll go with "Have fun playing X-Wing".

Have fun playing X-Wing

Which, to me, translates as "stress test this list".
