Armada Refugees Check-In

By BiggsIRL, in Star Wars: Legion

I wouldn't call myself a refugee - I'm simply multitasking. A key to victory is coordination between all ranks of military. Surely, I started as fighter wing captain, then got promoted to an admiral, and I find myself often in a simulator (i.e. casual game) than in a real dogfight (X-wing tournament), unless the need for skilled pilots is dire (the tournament is big enough). While my duties as admiral are quite time-consuming I do regularly engage in practice maneuvers and keep my sector under control with occasional skirmishes and bigger operations. Recently, there has been some unrest on a few nearby planet and I plan to react swiftly, sending in my best troopers, both assigned to my fleet by the Army, Special Forces and my own. I definitely will be leading those troops myself, as I believe to lead by example, no matter the scale of conflict. I'm a Rebel, after all :D

In other words, I playing X-wing since just a few days after Gencon '12, and engaged heavily into both casual and tournament playing, as well as judging and organizing events both big and small, heavy focusing on game promotion on local 'cons. Yet these days are over, at least until X-wing 2.0 comes out. Because X-wing was a test ground for some new ideas thet FFG had, it also accumulated most flaws and design mistakes that are increasingly harder to fix. Also, the actual inability to successfully fly an X-wing in X-wing pulled me away from the game. I still play it and it's still a fun game, just not as much as it once was, and it needs some heavy reworking at this point.

As for Armada, I set my eyes on this game from the very beginning. I adore it, it's almost everything I ever wanted form a tabletop strategy game. Yet due to financial issues I got into the game with slight delay, and until recently there was little to no community in my area, so it was hard to line up games and the closest tournaments were held almost 20o miles away. Things are much better now :)

And there is Legion - I planned to approach this game slowly, see how it develop, but man... this game's AWESOME!

So, it's gonna be equal time Armada and Legion for me, with occasional X-wing like once a month perhaps :P

Present!

I.... Would join you guys, except you're not as up and up about armor as I would like. My vision for ground combat is still an imperial armor battalion crushing rebel bases... That's not possible here. I'm intreagued with the game but I'd whip out my wallet only if I can assembly line four as-sts as a playable game unit under $80. That's not possible, so I can't indulge committing. :(

Maybe someday.

Glad -and entirely unsurprised -to see you all here.

Legion is a great game, and it's going to benefit from some of the best Armada players bringing their experience, commentary and tactical knowledge to it. /flattery :D

BTW as far as I know there is no Vassal version, but it's picking up interest on TTS.

there is an offical game format listed under pg 47 of the rrg that basically doubles all the values of the list building. Ofc how supported that format will be in tournaments and official events remains to be seen. Also gives hope for AT-AT drop

Strategic Adviser here making planetfall to learn some ground tactics, and hopefully prolong the war :)

I like armada as a game but the tournament system is terrible and that has turned me away. Strange that I like runewars so much, I suspect the way you score points in runewars helps but I am worried that it will go the same way

I have never played in a Armada tourney...........could not be bothered. But combining both Armada and Legion works well. Welcome to planetary sieges, blockade running, break the line scenarios. You can take the role of full on operational force. You want that planet, first you have to clear the enemy naval forces, then when they are neutralized begin the ground offensive. You can locate critical infrastructure to knockout with selected strike units. Or storm a airbase to suppress enemy air operations. What ever you want. Both can be put together.

I plan to try to merge armada and legion as well.

A plan for you then:

Campaign game: 1) Initial Recon of planetary system, must get info out to HQ

2) Suppression raids on key plantary defences ie listening posts.........orbital defences.

3) Full on assault with break the line, and Mopping up scenarios of enemy fleet.

4) Naval assault landing and bridgehead scenarios

5) Strike teams attack key locations

6) Full landing

@Undeadguy was working on a system as well I believe.

No progress in the past few weeks. I'm still getting a feel for Legion before I want to draft some rules.

Admiral Matt Antilles reporting in, preparing for ground assault!

I said I was not going to get into Legion because I'm not a painter and didn't want to get into it.

Then reading @BiggsIRL and @shmitty's blog posts made me go 'well maybe I'll check it out'. Several YouTube battle reports later and I'm in, except I don't want to paint because I have no skills. Then I stumble across @Sorastro's painting videos and that did it for me, I'm all in. Only have 1 partial game in, and only a couple base colors on 1 squad, but am loving playing (and painting) this game! Now all my spare dollars are going to be going to this lol.

I blame/thank you guys ;)

Do you have a thread for input and ideacrafting? I don't want to step on any toes but I'd love to help contribute, even if it's just a parking lot for ideas to be used at a future time.
