Is it gamey?

By Son of Skywalker, in Army Building

Hey everybody I was wondering I am kind of nervous to play against an opponent that might bring 2 At-St's. What is your opinion on bringing 2 of these war machines? Is it to gamey, alright, or will it bring down the enjoyment of the game and make somebody a waac player?

I'm waiting for Veers to do that, and I want an ATAT. Make of that what you will....

I think it's worth doing at least once to see the potential of the army build. It also depends on what your opponent is fielding. If they've stacked their army with a lot of anti-vehicle units, it should be fine. But if you're going against a Rebel army that came straight out of the starter set box, their chances of winning against two AT-STs are pretty slim.

The deployment, terrain, and objective are going to seriously impact how effective each unit is in this game, which is awesome! If you are lining up on the long edges with no terrain, then yes, twin AT-STs are probably going to win every time. If you are playing to the objective, prioritizing your targets, and making good use of the available terrain, then twin AT-STs may not be so good. Remember that, currently, to bring 2 AT-STs and Vader takes up 3/4 of your total points, and you still have to bring 3x Stormtrooper squads. That means that you are spending 722/800 points for just 6 units, before any upgrades. If you end up playing a mission where only Trooper unit leaders can score, then you have at least half o your points tied up in units that cannot score points.

With the few options available right now I dont consider anything "too gamey" or waac, we have too few units to play around with yet.

Im also sceptical that 2 ATATs would be very effective, depending on the table and objective I guess but they should more often then not be a waste of firepower.

I wouldn't consider it gamey at all. It's certainly intimidating, but in terms of raw stats and points the AT-ST isn't really that scary. Damage wise, its really not that scary. I mean, it does the same output as a pair of speeder bikes for over twice the cost. It's extra guns are certainly nice, but still nothing special. Durability wise its relying a lot on armor. It more or less needs to be blocking its health worth of shots on armor to be putting the kind of wounds on the table you get out of Stormtroopers.

That said, its got its uses and putting two of them on the table reduces the opponent's ability to make armor less effective via target selection. In a lot of games the armor doesn't seem worth it because its pretty easy to shoot your Impact weapons at the AT-ST and everything else at the Stormtroopers.

600 points tied up in 3 models when there is importance for troops is going to lead to some major problems for the at-st player. Also going to be next to no upgrades on the at-sts. they aren't ignorable because of this but the imperial player looks like they are aiming for total army wipe to win, which if the opponent is smart enough to use dodge action and cover and focus on getting victory points on key turns is unlikely to get wiped and win through playing the mission.

I faced 2 AT-ST list last night with my 3 speeder bike list. AT-STs were pretty bare bones. Besides having more activations, i was able to use my bikes to put pressure on his troops and my 3 DLT stormies way out preformed his vanilla squads due to points tied up in AT-STs. I focused one AT-ST down and the other lasted till end of game but he lost all his small stormtroops units. Our mission was the -get to the other side, so my extra stormtrooper unit with no heavy weapon was able to activate last most turns and just walk across table.

I think 2 AT-STs looks scary, but we currently have to take Vader, so points are very restricted. Once we see Veers, this may change but currently most of the talk in our local community is 2 AT-STs is not that scary.

2 AT-STs is a minimum of 722 points with no upgrades. It certainly doesn't leave much room to give models what they need to shine.

I think you mean 390 (it might be 380)

The 722 will include the minimum for a legal force, currently Vader and 3 Stormtrooper squads.
