Dash 2 ... Painting & Modeling

By Dash Two, in Painting

This is not a self plug or promotion or a bump. A LOT of people have read along and helped me the last few months via posts or private messages. I want to try and pay back the community. Specifically, the swarm of new hobbyist and painters. Appears to be a whole bunch of us.

Small technical issues embedding link. Anyway, new painters ...

There are tutorial references; directions; trials and errors and real-time feedback throughout. If I can somehow help you not make a similar mistake, I have achieved some hobby karma

No clue how to formally move the entire thread from where it is into the Painting area and, perhaps, not possible

Fail fast. Learn fast

Guys, no clue how to move my entire thread. An ask of the painting guys ...

Need some opinions on next steps, etc

I've watched every tutorial I can find over the past several months. Done trial runs. It is still an area of opportunity for me and I am never happy post wash. Don't like what I end up with.

All feedback appreciated

For the Rebel painters looking for desert themes and colors ... I have a list in here. Shoot me a note and I can send you a list of all paints I considered prior to going with this group

I got that whole different feel without deviating from a basic few colors. Explanation in the link.

Report the thread and ask for it to be moved in the comments field. It’s all you can do.

Thank you, sir

On the subject of washes, thin the wash with Lahmian medium and water in a 1-1-1 ratio. You could even thin it more than that if you want and use the wash more like a filter until you get the hang of it. Even thinned, target it carefully into recesses and shadows instead of covering everything. It can be helpful to make your own filter from thinned paint, as doing so well really help you understand what various consistencies will do to your base coat. Start small, and build up from there.

The other thing I'd suggest is treating the wash as a very early step. I prime, base coat, and then wash; afterwards the real work begins. I start by going back over areas with the base coat colors, as this helps to lessen the effect of the wash on areas that will receive highlights. Then the highlighting proceeds from there.

@serrate ... thank you. I am going to thin it way down and apply in several layers. See what happens.

You also appear to have been moved ?

@Drasnighta ... i sent in a request yesterday. I still have the old thread in the General Discussion and, then, here. At least that is how I a viewing it.

I made a request to merge threads ... not sure it is happening.

Some progress and instructions for other new guys on some weathering techniques and, then, some success I had with washes. Finally. Thin washes in same vein you would paints. Apply in layers. Wipe away what you don't want. Go figure.
