Mask of the PQ Tips?

By evo454, in Game Masters

So I've got myself a copy of the mission module for Mask of the Pirate Queen and I'm going to be reading through it while I'm traveling for Easter, but I wanted to ask you more experienced GM's:

-Is there anything you know off the top of your head I should look to change?

-Should I adjust the difficulty for higher level players or leave it be?

-Any general tips for running the mission? I'm still relatively new to being a GM so I'm always looking for tips.

Thanks in advance!

The book mentions this, but...be prepared for the players to take over the role of the Pirate Queen (assuming a human/near human female is in the group).

In one campaign I play in, our GM ran us through a slightly modified version of it. My wife? Yeah...she’s the Pirate Queen now, and uses that reputation and the Veiled Sorority’s resources to great advantage.

Yeah...everything...my first rule is NeRaMaW: Never run a module as written. :)

That aside, I'm not much of a fan of the module as written, because I think it stuffs an entire campaign's worth of possibility into a single chapter in the PC's story. If I ever ran it, I would space things out considerably with lots of other encounters between the ones in the book, and have the Pirate Queen be a recurring issue until eventually it becomes the most important issue to the PCs. Otherwise you'll end up with fairly newb PCs holding the reigns of a criminal empire (or dying in the attempt).

That said, I think it's reasonably scaled for PCs if the players know the rules and make good decisions with 50-100XP under their belts.
