I see that they went with the movie troopers that miss most of the time with their blasters, but it seems a little odd that they are more deadly while unarmed. Is there something that I'm missing here?
Stormtroopers are better in Melee?
I keep hearing that the idea is that it's not the Stormtrooper that sucks at hitting things, it's the E-11 blaster that sucks. So their dice is to reflect that.
Nope. Black die is better than white die. And the "Aim" action affects either, so they benefit equally from melee and ranged "Aim" rerolls (to include their Native "Precise 1" stormtrooper ability).
Yes. The troopers are highly trained, it’s those mass produced E-11 rifles that have such terrible quality control which is why they aim terribly. But hand to hand yeah you better watch out.
Hitting people with rifle butts is hardly "unarmed"
yeah, compared to rebel troopers they're way better in melee. they have one more usable die face on both attack and defense. if we assume precise 1 and nimble are equal (in a melee, and probably in general, I'd argue precise is better anyways) it means stormtroopers are quite a bit better in melee, or with grenades. and their primary heavy weapon is way better too.

Stormtroopers use he same black attack die as Rebel Troopers, and Snowtroopers, Fleet Troopers, and Rebel Commandos.
I think it comes down to two attributes other than that black die: that red armor die and the "-" courage Vader can give.
As for the nimble vs precise discussion, I found that it was highly dependent on factors like number of dice used, surge quality, available cover, and so on.
Stormtroopers never hit anything at range. But they get to do it from the relative safety of range.
Also, Stormtroopers that aim get Precise, which I rather like. Reflects their training with questionable equipment, and does a good job of splitting the baby between what we see throughout the series and Obi-Wan's infamous remark.

He's referring to the fact that Stormies get an attack surge so one more side will be a hit.

Technically, as soon as it's not a main character they're shooting at (Or when told to let them escape such as on the Death Star), they tend to hit quite a bit in the movies. The battle on the Taintive IV is pretty much showing them as murder machines tearing through the fleet troopers there, the ones in Rogue 1 tend to be rather nasty as well...
They still get a lot of kills on Endor as well...
The E-11 is basically a sub machinegun for fighting in cramped environments like trenches starship corridors, etc.
After all they are the SW analouge of WW1 Stormtroopers used to take enemy positions in cqc using smgs, body armour and grenades.
Their hand to hand combat stat represents them using their E-11 in close quarters. After all Legion has no other way to distinguish accuracy at different ranges.

exactly, the Stormtroopers on the Death Star are under trained draftees who never see combat, but Vader's 501's see action a lot so are good at their job

They were also told to let them escape so the could lead the empire to the rebel base. So killing them was out of the question.
