Campaign content for L5R

By Osmia, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

I’m pretty new to LCGs. L5R was my first, and I’ve branched out to Arkham horror because I wanted to see how a story driven, cooperative game worked. Net runner has now caught my eye, I’m interested in it’s asymmetry. I’m pretty excited in the legacy style concepts behind terminal directive, I think there is a lot of potential there.

What do the L5R community think about this? Personally, I couldn’t wait for a story driven legacy element to L5R. This could be competitive and (for example) could contain a narrative and cards for two clans in a specific conflict. Or it could be cooperative and pit two players (or one, even) against a preset deck. This could either be the shadowlands or maybe an emerging minor clan. Some cards would be specific to that pack, and some would be part of the broader competitive framework this game is built on.

For me, this is what a “living” card game should be. I’m very excited about the potential in L5R. Would love to hear if anyone else is?

I am not sure that a bleeding edge competitive card game (which is what L5R is marketed as) and a asymmetrical game that allows for coop vs the game "story mode" games would work. I would be a nightmare trying to balance those cards to the competitive scene, OR you make them some weird subset of cards that are not allowed in the competitive scene? My hopes for the storyline play of L5R are similar to what came out of the CCG; I want the tournament outcomes to impact the story development. Did a Crane clan win the tourney through a surprise military attack against the Scorpions in the final? The story should reflect that and maybe even the next expansion should have a more militant lean for the Crane. In that conflict did the Crane clan Champion die in a duel to a random Scorpion character? Well then, I expect a new Crane clan Champion to be released for the game and that Scorpion character to receive a big update to reflect the achievement in the game.

I also want there to be a way for player to impact the story beyond placing highly in competitive matches. Some sort of bi annual closed clan voting? Like you register yourself to a clan and you are allowed to cast a vote for certain choices to clan makes, which translates into storylines in the fiction and different cards for your clan.

Sorry, but not gonna happen. We already know how FFG is going to manage the story in relation to winners of tournaments. Basically, the winner makes a choice from an already preset list of options.

We know from the writers that the fictions are already written before that decision, one for each of the possible options, without taking in consideration who won or how they won.

There’s also another way of influencing the story right now and is reporting OP games to gain points for your clan regarding who gets to keep Toshi Ranbo. But the system itself (just reporting winners) makes also irrelevant how you won.

It’s this system better than AEG’s? Well, it certainly is a different approach, who allows for more control of the story by FFG, instead of giving tha control to the player and risking some weird plots like in the CCG era.

Is this better for the game, or worse? Only time will tell.

There is no limit to fan created casual play formats.

I think an ongoing story driven format would be pretty interesting. Make all dead characters in the story unplayable, errata titles on characters that change status/clans affiliations, i.e. allowing married characters to be played by either clan, etc.

If/when a shadowlands faction shows up, a special rule to allow dead characters in the story to be played by them could be neat.

Only allow splashing with clans that their exists an established alliance, i.e no Lion/Crane or Crane/Lion decks until they work their stuff out in story.

Yeah I could be down to play something like this on the side. I'm not really focused on competitive play at the moment anyways. Not unless there is a Kotei in the pacific NW or BC anytime soon.
