Prequels vs Sequels vs Scum

By Jabby, in Star Wars: Legion

Prequels, the Clones and Droids would make for great armies, and there is the chance that I might get caught in the money trap that is trying to paint various Clone Legions. Like seriously, just imagine the money sitting there on the table and the fun for painters!

I wouldn't mind getting some FO stuff, but the Resistance so far has been really boring as far as their troops go.

My preference would be to initially expand the game with a Scum faction (or multiple Scum factions) to try keeping things in the Civil War timeline. If they wanted to move outside of that timeline, I'm going with the consensus that the prequels offer the most interesting options.

Whatever they do with the game, I think new factions are a must. Selling $40 faction starter packs is how you get rich and stuff.

Step 1 - Prequels, so I can murder every scrub tier character (all of them) with impunity

Step 2 - Sequels, so I can have Rey style on everyone and elicit salty tears from people who think she's a lousy character. Also I will of course also get a Kylo mini and have him watch from the sidelines to allow me to roleplay and live ship their romance mid battle to distract my opponent by misquoting them. "I love you, Kylo, but you're just too good at murder" "You're not at all coarse like sand."

Step 3 - Scum, so I can create a houserule in which anyone who gets a melee strike on Boba Fett OHKOs him by having him fly off the board in a jetpack accident

I just want to play Empire and Rebels. Where is that option?

It’ll be here until for awhile, even with the one expansion per month style, it’ll be at least a year before they begin to dive into other areas I would assume.

they have plans for creatures, and various trooper units from both sides spanning from the beginning of rebels to Jakku could be added.

I’m reluctantly painting Rebels - I got gifted stuff - but as it’s core and non trooper expansions I will not have a legal force.

maybe I’ll just prep and sell it all once Droids are a thing

Scum. I want a fleshed out star wars miniature line that includes the iconic seedy underbelly of the star wars universe. I want gammoreans, pirates, smugglers, boutny hunters, cartels, mercs... everything.

Imperial assault?

As much as the movies let me down (TPM). I still want Grevious and a ton of tinnies. Maybe Ga’Nacht and Durge to boot

Thats pretty **** evil

Scum.

I never watched the prequels, so have no personal interest in that choice. I have only watched the first of the sequels and found it thoroughly forgettable, so I have no interest in that setting either.

I would rather see another faction that more directly relates to the current timeline of the game and one that, on the surface of it, looks like it would play completely differently to the current two. Therefore, I'd rather a scum faction.

Hutt Cartel for me. Have access to a bunch of neat things, such as Skiffs, Rancors, Jabba, Bounty Hunters, Gammorean Guards, gangsters, various droids, etc, etc.

Scum and Villainy with a change in the force organization. They may not have a Commander but have an expanded Special Forces slot for 4+ units

While there's quite a bit that could still be done with the Rebels VS Empire that we are looking at now, there's quite a lot that I would like to see brought in as well. From least exciting to most (in my opinion):

The Sequels: While the designs are cool, we again have a low-cost Resistance VS a high cost First Order, which is a pretty close match to what we already have. There would be a few unique models that can be brought in, but most of what we've seen have been essentially redesigns of what we'll already have in the game.

Scum and Villainy: There's a great deal of creative material in the setting to flesh out this faction, but the neutral factions don't really have a dedicated armed force (at least, not during the Original Trilogy time period). Still, as a way to fill out the rosters for both sides, this would be a great option for players to go with.

The Prequels: In terms of variety, I would say that the Prequel Trilogy would be the second best choice for bringing variety into the game. You would invert the high cost Dark Side VS low cost Light Side dynamic that we have with Alliance VS Empire, and each side has a few dedicated subfactions that could introduce some very interesting dynamics into the game. As much as I dislike the prequels, they really would make for a great Miniatures game.

However, there is one section of lore that I think would well outstrip the potential of all the previous options, and which was unfortunately not included in the poll - that being the time of the Knights of the Old Republic. You have the Old Republic and the Jedi on the Light Side and the Sith Empire on the Dark Side with plenty of interesting figures for both sides, and the various underworld factions are quite well defined in here, giving you plenty of options for neutral factions and models.

The sequels are easy for FFG to cash in on and to bring new players on board. The prequels and Kotor suffer from being more niche and/or posses a negative public perception.

Scum gives us Rancors!!!! Rancor parties for everyone!

Some would argue Rebels are scum... :P

Personally, I'd rather continue a focus on the Rebellion period for a while.

While it may be less of a thing, I'd love to also see a bit of a cue from the WotC minis game with a fringe faction that can be mixed in with Rebels or Imperials as well as being their own thing.

Things like the old story where Boba Fett pretty much runs rampant through an Imperial base while still being able to be recruited by any side with the credits to do so.

Mercenaries and others that might be on whichever side or on their own, there are piles of droid models that everyone was using versions of (Things like the mine laying droids from the Decipher CCG) or even general transport vehicles that might be used by anyone because they're available.

On top of that, perhaps some sub factions that could be interesting like the Black Sun or similar where they could be their own faction if someone wanted to do so, or just being reinforcements on one side or the other (Imperial crackdown on an area prompting the local underworld to be antagonistic to the Imperials and aiding the rebels, and in others, well, the Imps are paying some good credits for taking down some rebels...).

Being a middle of the road group would also up the sales of them since players focusing on either rebels or imperials would want to buy them, and with things like some of the vehicles, those are also workable scenery as well...

Yes, well kotor is much more niche than the prequels. Most players wouldn’t recognise any of the stuff there, and it would be the equivalent of adding in obscure eu stuff like the Chariot command vehicle

I'm happy sticking with the Original Trilogy (plus Rogue One of course, which is like a footnote to it.)

Also prequels. Droid army would be great. Clones could be nice too. And even gungans could get some diversity on the table. Especially if their army contains no human.

I would love to see prequel stuff down the road. I am getting a little tired of constantly seeing original trilogy stuff constantly in Imperial Assault, Armada, X-wing(to a degree). It would be nice to see clones and battle droids duking it out or heck have a Clone vs Empire battle happen. The Clone Wars was a actual war compared to the Galatic Civil War, and as such I think it would have a place in this.

People say the prequel trilogy has a bad rep but the sequel trilogy has been not been doing so hot either.

Scum is interesting but I think they would need different rules for this game type. I think a Hire option would be cool where we could hire a bounty hunter or smuggler for either side to bring in outside help.

My biggest pet peeve with people's arguments is that the films were bad. That means literally nothing in the scheme of a board game. Clones and Droids would be an incredible addition to a miniatures wargame with armies. (I am not attacking you or accusing you of saying that, I'm just responding to you because you make valid points) For too long we have been given only GCW this or only GCW that. There ARE prequel era fans that want to see their Star Wars in media. Star Wars is Star Wars, whether people like it or not. The GCW is Star Wars and the Clone Wars is Star Wars regardless of how **** the movies were. I don't know why people are so adamant on NOT having something in the game. If you don't want to play it, don't play it. That shouldn't stop other players who actively want a faction or specific army in the game from playing them.

People also complain that the fights wouldn't make sense because of the timeline, but when do we see snowtroopers on Endor or Tatooine? The timeline really shouldn't matter in this game and if your personal problem with the game is "but but but... my Imperials can't fight Droids!! That doesn't make sense in the canon" then I honestly just feel bad.

I feel like I am alone in this but I really don't want to see any knights of the old republic stuff. I don't like the design aesthetics of kotor. It just doesn't fit with star wars.

KOTOR's aesthetics are the Prequel's aesthetics but slightly more polygonal. Unless you're thinking of Tales of the Jedi comics.
