Psychic Weapons vs Living Statue

By Black Dawn, in Talisman Rules Questions

One of my friends argued that you can use any of the Psychic weapons that are Magic Objects to kill the Living Statue.

In other words, he thinks that the weapon will not give him any combat bonus, but will still kill the Statue because it is a Magic Object.

Does this work?

There is no ruling on this that I can recall. You need to defeat the Living Statue with a Weapon that is a Magic Object. There is nothing in the rules about using a Magic Object Weapon in battle, even though it doesn't give you a bonus (say Bane Sword). So I would probably allow it. Still doesn't help the Monk or Priest vs Living Statue, since neither can use a Weapon in battle.

I would argue that you can't use the Bane Sword, or other magic weapons that only give bonuses for Pshychic Combat, because you engage the Living Statue in Battle, not PC

I think the question is whether you can use any Weapon in any combat, even if said Weapon doesn't give you any benefit. Here, it could be argued Bane Sword doesn't give you stat benefits (since it does nothing in battle), yet gives you a benefit if you defeat the LS. This doesn't change the fact that if you have multiple Weapons, you can choose to use any one of those weapons. Using Bane Sword in battle doesn't make it become a non-Magical Object, so from that POV it could count for killing the LS.

I agree aplauso.gif

If the Bane sword can be used for psychic combat, and you must fight a battle with the Living statue, then you can;t use the bane sword, because it's not psychic combat.

This is something I've never thought about.

As a common practice I feel it's natural to think that a Weapon can't be used in a type of combat where it gives no bonus. This is the most important difference between Fate Stealer (battle only), Bane Sword (psychic combat vs. Spirits only) and Sword of Light/Skull Wand (gives bonus in both).

The crucial point is: if a card does not apply its text to the gameplay can you assume you're using it? I think the answer is no. Living Statue doesn't give a **** if you wield a Bane Sword. Your Character won't care about it too, because he knows very well that a Bane Sword is an artifact that can't be used in battle.

Yeah, the core question is "can you use any weapon in any kind of combat, even if it doesn't give you a bonus".

After thinking about it, I'm pretty sure the answer is "no", because then you could use the Fate Stealer in psychic combat and gain fate despite not having gotten a bonus from the sword. That does not work for me. I'd still like to hear from a mod about the specific instance of the living Statue, but I think I know for sure what the answer is now.

It`s the same whit spells, you can`t cast them if they don`t have some kind of effect (just to maybe get rid of it), the same whit the sword you are asking about, since it is a battle, the sword don`t work, and therfor you can`t use it at all. thats my opinion.

Except Fate Stealer only gives you a point of Fate when you defeat an Enemy in battle. So you can hack all the Spirits you want with it, still won't get any Fate, because psychic combat doesn't give you a point of Fate with Fate Stealer.

I'd say no as well, you need to have a viable target for the effect. I was packing the Rod of Ruin and the other player only had 1 Str, and you have to take 2 away from the player to use it. It's a cruel, cruel object and I took it to the Alchemist toot sweet. Bane Sword is only good in Psychic combat, your friend is wiley in their lawyering but Living Statue has no sympathy.

You can also choose to take away 1 strength and 1 craft with Rod of Ruin

It's unwise to bring it to the alchemist and turning it in for one gold gran_risa.gif

It's one of the best objects.

ah, it was so early in the game, and I direly needed the space, we were dropping stuff all over the map and there was immediatly useful stuff. She wasn't anywhere near getting a 2nd cone and I was down to 2 lives, so armour was more useful then the looming threat of knocking her down a notch. Now, if I could have absorbed the cones, that's a different story ;)
